As one of the most outstanding members of the Prague School,Jan Mukarovsky’s contribution on structuralist theory of literature and aesthetics has been acknowledged.Having fruitfully surmounted the atomization tendency of Russian Formalist literary theory,he established a system of structuralist theory, which is diachronic, dynamic and bridging the autonomy and heteronomy. This dissertation bases on the use of language, and tries to manifest Mukarovsky’s study on aesthetics. The dissertation consists of 6 parts, including the main part from chapter 1 to 4 and the introduction and the conclusion. The introduction represents the reasons of the selection of the topic, the resources pertinent to Mukarovsky, the basic viewpoints and structural arrangement of the study.Chapter 1 elaborates "How to use language".It will interpret foregrounding by virtue of markedness opposition and its reversal, which is one of the core concepts of Mukarovsky’s aesthetics.Through that, clarities that how to cognize poetic language and modem arts. The discussion transites to aesthetic function. In the standpoint of function, the essence of literature is the use of language,or language has been used as literature.Under the theme "Who uses language",in order to discuss relationship between author and intentionality of artistic work,a work has been constructed as a semantic structure.Chapter 2 tries to recover the relationship between author and his works,to recover the author who has produced his work and who he is veiled by the autonomic work.Language is used by author, not the other people.Chapter 3 investigates institution of art, which has been seen as "the prerequisites for using language".The investigation originates from the evolution of art and aesthetic norms under the change of social cultural context. In a word, the change of aesthetic norms leads to the evolution of art.The institution of art is a weak degree of institutionalization influenced by social culture.Basing on that, the relationship between artistic tradition and evolution of literature is indeterministic. The object of chapter 4 is "the double identity of language".Artificial product and aesthetic object, the double identity of language, has been united by "sign".The using of language just produces artificial products, not the aesthetic object.Artistic sign acts as media of communication, and bridges the gap between autonomic art and social culture, which are heteronomous elements for art.The last part is a conclusion for this dissertation and Mukarovsky’s theories.Art works is not only a autonomic object, but also a necessary part of social practice."How to do things with text" means people can cognize and change the world with text.
