Kai-Cheung Dong,a Hong Kong writer,obtained Taiwan’s United Daily News Literary Award with the short story "Shao Nian Shen Nong",medium-length novel"An Zhuo Zhen Ni" and novel "Shuang Shen" in 1994 and 1995,and then caused the attention of literary critic for his female writing.However,since 1997,the novels of Kai-Cheung Dong turned to city writing in the core of Hong Kong and its history,he published four modular collection of short stories with the name of "V city series".From 2005 to 2010,Kai-Cheung Dong published "Natural History Trilogy" composed by "Tian Gong Kai Wu·Xu Xu Ru Zhen","Shi Jian Fan Shi-Ya Ci Zhi Guang" and"Wu Zhong Yuan Shi·Bei Bei Chong Sheng".These novels cover material writing,character relationship,urban history,spatio-temporal crisscross,female writing,intertextuality and para simulation,and construct a fictional world which is more complicated and more realistic than the real world.The works of Kai-Cheung Dong looks independent,but interrelated and mutual involvement.Both the content and form of his novels are complicated and profound,thus his creative concept can not be explained by a single works.Research on the relationship of the novels is an important way of finding Dong’s creative concept.This thesis will be mainly discussed in the point of view of "city writing",using the method of text analysis,to read and analyze novels of Kai-Cheung Dong.At the same time,analyzing the novels with culture theory and literary theory,perusing the meaning behind the works and exploring the link between the works and works.In the point of view of reading a huge novel consisted of numerous interrelated piece to analyze the creative concept,context and purpose of writing.The thesis firstly cites historical research theory to trace the history of the V city/Hong Kong and discussed the difficulties of the city faced by present and future.Then analyzes the change of space in the city in the process of globalization and the development of capitalism and the impact it brings to Hong Kong people.And then explores the delicate relationship between urban development and object,as well as the alienation and intimate symbiotic relationship between persons and things in modern city from the point of view of material cultural history.In addition,this thesis analyzes the relationship among Kenzaburo Oe ’s"Novel Method",Hieronymus Bosch’s "The Garden of Earthly Delights",Sandro Botticelli’s "Primavera" and Kai-Cheung Dong’s novels and tries to clarify the impact that those art forms put on the novels.The first chapter combes the very different history of Hong Kong since 1840 with the theory of "a variety of history/histories" by Hayden White.With this theory,China and Britain respectively covered some of the events and highlights some elements to"suppress" and "boost" some part of the history of Hong Kong.This chapter also narrates the changes of urban space in Hong Kong during a hundred years and reviewed the creative process of Kai-Cheung Dong.This chapter clarifies the impact of "British colonial writing" "Chinese nationalist narrative" and "Hong Kong awareness" on the history of Hong Kong,and paves the way for the discussion below.On the background provided in the previous chapter,Kai-Cheung Dong analyzes the history of the modern city relationship between people and material.The first section presents the situation that people in Hong Kong put too much emphasis on material consumption.The second section discusses the use of personal items and the user’s unique personal feelings and experience.In the third section,Kai-Cheung Dong intends to "imitate" from those "material" that used to appeared in a city.The third chapter discusses the roles and meanings of the several locations,such as swimming pool,fairy well/baby universe and skating field in Kai-Cheung Dong’s novels,in order to explore how the writer to present individual self-worth in the city and the process of urban destruction and rebirth.The timeline in Dong’s novel has a circle movement and this is to break the continuously movement of linear time and created a "loop" for the city that may revamp the unchangeable mistake which has cause the negative growing for the city’s development.The fourth chapter discusses the innovative forms of Kai-Cheung Dong from two aspects:para writing and imagination.The first section analyzes the correspondences between novel text and the history and space of city,as well as among the characters in different novels,also the multiple identities of the writer.Section two discusses the important role of imagination in Kai-Cheung Dong’s novels and points out that the imagination is human survival itself and it can create new meanings.
