| Chinese Avant-Garde novelists of the New Period are sensitive writers,who are aware of Western literary thoughts and consciously exhibit their own comprehension in their works.However,inheriting the tradition of Chinese literati,they also cultivate their own modern tragic consciousness.Therefore,it is feasible to locate outstanding tragic values proclaimed in their efforts to combine Western and Chinese tragic consciousness.However,the issue of contemporary Chinese Avant-Gardists’ tragic consciousness still remains largely unexplored,and few works have made a profound deliberation on it.Examining minute variations and discrepancies of tragic consciousness between Occidental and Oriental theories and presentations in literary works,especially those by contemporary writers like Mo Yan,Yu Hua,Ge Fei,Su Tong and so on,the present author of this dissertation attempts a systematic and thorough study in this field synchronically and diachronically.In the first chapter,he reviews and discusses the similarities and differences of tragic consciousness between Chinese and Western literatures in three typical periods of human history,thereafter divides and summarizes Universe,Earth and Man respectively as three distinctive levels of tragic consciousness in accordance with Chinese philosophy masterpiece I Ching.He explores,in the second chapter,the multiple reasons of mutual intelligibility of mysticism and fatalism derived from Universe in both Chinese Avant-Garde novels and traditional tragedy,and argues intrinsic rationality and contemporaneity of Chinese Avant-Garde novels’ absorbing and transforming traditional tragic consciousness afterwards.In the third chapter,the present author,through a close reading,locates various elements of Chinese Avant-Garde novels relating loneliness and absurdness of Earth which also prevail even today in Western modern tragedy,and clears the inter se disparities thereafter based on the local contemporary tragedy spirit’s presence.He contemplates the great achievements of Human consideration after the turnaround of Chinese Avant-Garde novelists’ writing since 1990s,the implied purpose of the enlightenment is found in a comparatively new means in the last chapter.In the course of study,both theoretical discussion and case analysis are focused,the present author at the same time,strives to realize thorough perception and understanding of tragic consciousness in Chinese Avant-Garde novels,digs out the sophisticated mental activities,identifies the fresh and unique temperaments which novelists commence and develop,and finally sums up the complexity,variability and diversity of tragic consciousness in Chinese Avant-Garde novels,aiming to make a significant contribution to the correlation research in Chinese contemporary literature. |
