Grasshopper disaster occurred seriously in China in recent years.Since 2001,the damaged area by grasshoppers has been over 12 million hectares.Continuous occurrence of grasshoppers disaster has seriously damaged rangeland vegetation,and has threatened the national ecological security,livestock production and herdsman living.Research and application grasshoppers monitoring and warning technology can help to clarify the distribution and dynamic of grasshoppers,to carry out focused monitoring and timely prevention and control,to improve the ability of pastoral for disaster prevention and mitigation,and to improve production and living conditions for herdsmen.Based on ecological characteristics of rangeland areas and pastoral reality in China,we proposed main methods and basic steps of grasshoppers monitoring,established dividing standards and methods for grasshoppers inhabitable area and inhabitability index model was built according to geographical features,rangeland types and grasshoppers species et al.Using this model,we studied the main grasshoppers inhabitable area in China,and early warning was done for occurrence trends of grasshoppers disaster in the year.According to the dividing of main grasshoppers9 inhabitable area,simultaneously combined with historical data,grasshoppers’ inhabitable areas in China was divided into three regions,which were southern Mongolian Plateau and its surrounding,Xinjiang Mountain and Qinghai-Tibet alpine,based on regional geographical features,rangeland vegetation and distribution of grasshopper species.Among them,the region of southern Mongolian Plateau and its surrounding could be divided into sixteen subregions,Xinjiang Mountain could be divided into seven subregions and Qinghai-Tibet alpine could be divided into nine subregions preliminary.Grasshoppers monitoring and warning system and field ground data collection system were built using "3S" technology.Their application in thirteen provinces and Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps realized real-time monitoring for grasshopper disaster,field survey,sentinel surveillance and perennial observation.The systems have functions with data query and Statistics and disaster space simulation,and the information technology of grasshoppers monitoring and warning was improved by them.
