Reserch On Tung Chuin's Architectual Writings

Tung Chuin(1900-1983)is an unavoidable figure in modern Chinese architectural history and thus the analyzing object of many researchs.The present studies are mostly on his design practice,this dissertation,however,focuses on his neglected architectural writings.By the juxtaposition of Tung's texts and others',The overlap,conflict and interweave of meanings make Tung's thoughts more understandable.Meanwhile,knowledge construction and knowledge production process of Tung's writings are analyzed,theoretical anticipation such as ontology,epistemology,methodology and viewpoint of practice behind the writings are concerned.Both the multiple text reading and discourse analysis are considered under the context of China's modern transformation.This dissertation is divided into six chapters.The first chapter introduces the research background,content,methods and significance.It points out that the existing research focuses too much on the author,and determines the methods of multiple text reading and discourse analysis.The second chapter briefly presents Tung's writing features,classification,historical division,as well as the historical context.The third chapter is Tung's architectural review,including its content,writing space,comment object,evaluation standard,and the relationship between architectural review and design practice.It also lists the comments of the other individuals in the same period,and carries out the control study.The fourth chapter is Tung's architectural history,including western architecture,Soviet Union & eastern European architecture,Japanese architecture,architectural education,and Chinese architecture.Under the perspective of historiography and historical theory,it points out the hierarchy,form,example,program,and style of his writings.The ontology,epistemology,methodology and view of practice behind the discussion are also revealed.The fifth chapter is Tung's gardening history,mainly about his three masterpieces.Similar to the previous chapter,it is still analyzed under the perspective of historiography and historical theory.At the same time,by comparing with other gardening scholars such as Liu Dunzhen,it reveals Tung's unique characteristics in terms of the ontology,epistemology,methodology and view of practice.The sixth chapter is conclusion and prospect,in addition to summarize the full text,this chapter also points out that the above three contents of writings reflect the practice guidance,form dominance and the pursuit of modernity,this is closely related to Tung's architect identity.This chapter also looks into the possibility of the transition from the history of thoughts to the history of ideas.
