There are eco-environmental problems during energy resource exploitation while existing related theories and methods can't evaluate them well,so this paper introduces metabolic theory into the evaluation of energy resource exploitation,and Energy resource exploitation metabolic theory is put forward.Based on this theory,material metabolism evaluation method based on embodied flow(EROM),energy metabolism evaluation method based on emergy(EmEROI)and energy metabolism evaluation method based on exergy(ExEROI)are built and applied to case studies.First,this paper expounds energy resource in system theory,entropy and dissipative structure theory to identify the essence of its contribution to social and economic development is the potential entropy increasing ability.This is essentially consistent with the metabolism fundamental purpose that obtaining “Negative entropy”.On this basis,this paper put forward the energy resource exploitation metabolic theory.The metabolism of energy resource exploitation is a complete process in which funds,materials and energy are invested into the energy resource exploitation system,which acts on the natural energy resources,produces energy products,and discharges waste and waste energy to the ecological environment.This theory is mainly used to clarify the basic path of capital,material and energy flow,and to reveal the objective state of energy resource exploitation and its impact on the environment.By analogy with other metabolic theories,the feasibility of the theory is demonstrated,and then a conceptual model is constructed to guide practice.Under the guidance of this theory,the system framework of metabolic evaluation method for energy resource exploitation metabolism theory is described.The nature of value is multidimensional,and the energy resource exploitation metabolism is divided into three aspects: capital metabolism,material metabolism and energy metabolism.Metabolic evaluation methods are also divided into single dimension value evaluation methods for basic research and compound dimension value evaluation methods for future study.Taking discounted cash flow(DCF)and energy return on investment(EROI)as examples,the importance of multi-dimensional evaluation is illustrated from the perspective of method derivation and case study.Second,this paper focuses on the basic reserch of metabolic evaluation method.For material metabolism,besides the pollutants discharged directly or the substances consumed directly,the pollutants discharged or the specific substance consumed at the production end should also be taken into account.Therefore,the idea of embodied flow is introduced into material metabolism on the basis of the existing material flow accounting methods.EROM is built for the evaluation of energy resource exploitation material metabolism.Considering the social concern and data acquisition,carbon and water are selected as the research objects,the embodied carbon and virtual water coefficients of various departments in China are calculated,and shale gas exploitation in Sichuan Basin is taken as a case study.For energy metabolism,energy return on investment(EROI)has made some achievements in the study of energy flow in the process of energy resource exploitation,but EROI calculates the “quantity” of energy only by calorific value method,ignoring the “quality” of energy.In order to take energy quality into account,on the one hand,considering the embodied energy of energy and in the perspective of energy formation,emergy theory and method is introduced into energy metabolism evaluation,and EmEROI is constructed,which not only realizes the consideration of energy quality,but also expands the input factors of EROI.In the case study of Daqing Oilfield exploitation,it is proved that the evaluation results of EmEROI is more objective and accurate.On the other hand,considering the usefulness of energy and in the perspective of energy use,exergy theory and method is introduced into energy metabolism evaluation,and ExEROI is built,which takes energy “quality” into account and expands the input factors as well.In the case study of Sichuan Basin shale gas exploitation,the standard EROI is improved,and the results of ExEROI and standard EROI are compared and analyzed.In summary,the essence of energy resource is the potential entropy increasing ability and energy resource exploitation system is a dissipative structure,which is consistent with metabolic process of life body absorbing low entropy resources and discharging high entropy waste in order to maintain the function of the system.The energy resource exploitation metabolic theory and method is feasible with important significance and much more research is needed.
