Peridynamics(PD)is proved to have some advantages over conventional methods in fracture and damage analysis of composites. In the present study,a novel ordinary state-based(OSB)peridynamic composite spherical-horizon model is proposed, and applied to modeling analysis of composites. The OSB PD composite spherical-horizon model is derived by using spherical horizon instead of adjacent-layer horizon in the previous peridynamic laminate theory(PDLT).The transverse Poisson’s ratio v13、v23 is considered in the present OSB PD composite spherical-horizon model.Based on the relationship between critical bond breakage work and material frature toughness, the derivation process of energy absorbtion for unite delamination front gowth is improved.Improved energy-based failure criteria for PD modeling of composite static and impact problems are proposed.Modelings of composite interlayer fracture toughness, composite open-hole tensile(OHT)and composite low-velocity impact(LVI)experiments are conducted using this OSB PD composite spherical-horizon model with improved energy-based failure criteria.PD modeling results of composite interlayer fracture toughness tests validate that PD can quantitatively capture the delamination process of composites and delamination front shape, and the improved energy-based failure critera can significantly improve the delamination modeling accuracy.PD modeling results of composite OHT tests results validate that PD can accurately predict the the OHT strength of composites and capture typical failure modes of composites: fiber breakage, matrix cracks and delamination.PD modeling results of composite low-velocity impact tests validate that PD can accurately predict contact force variation during the impact process, the three typical damage modes variation during the impact process, and accurately predict delamination shape and area after impact. The above PD modeling analysis of sample-level composites provides the foundation and confidence of further investigation of PD modeling of structural-level composite fracture and damage.
