This is a macrosrtuctural study on the development of bank industry in Hankow from1861to1949, which explains the relationship between the changes on Hankow's banks and traditional-banks, the changes on Hankow's economic stature, and the changes on Hankow's economic foundation for finance, based on the tradition-modernity model" theory. At the end of the paper, the writer advocates that there are at least four basic characters in Hankow's modern finance history.First, Hankow became the second finance center in China rapidly, just inferior Shanghai, after been a treaty port. This is a particular case in Chinese modern finance history.Second, Hankow is an extra traditional city. In the first30years after open door, foreign banks were involved in the competition with traditional banks in China. This is a long way for western banks to expand its influence tile20s twenty century. But, Hankow's native banks developed at the same time.Third, the economic foundation of Hankow's finance industry was not stable enough. It has closer relation to political environment than other cities. After the Revolution of1911, China involved in longtime civil war. Though local merchantry had exerted effort to keep the prosperity, the city's "port economy" throw it's banks in storm. This is very different to Shanghai, which has stable economic foundation in zhejiang and jiangsu province.Forth, the Hankow's finance industry lost it's center stature after the Revolution of1911, and from then on, it never reconvert.as a traditional commercial city, the free spirit of commerce is very important to Hankow's finance industry. In the process of Hankow's decline, the beginning is the oceanward of Chinese economy, and the Nanjing government's finance control is the real terminator. This paper advocate that such four points are all relate to the stature changes of Hankow in Chinese "tradition-modernity" dualistic economy system in modern age.The first chapter is a review of the change of Hankow's economic position and financial backgruand. The second chapter is a history of Hankow's bank industry before the Revolution of1911.The third is the history about the free development of Hankow's bank industry. The fourth chapter discussed the change of Hankow's bank under the national financal system of Nanjing government. The fifth is about the colonization of Hankow's bank in the sacond world war. Sixth is about the downturn of Hankow's finance industry. The paper's conclusion is at the end.
