The history of human civilization is the history of constant communication, borrowi ng, and co-developing between different cultures. The communication between different cultures has significantly pushed forward the progress of human civilization and peaceful development of the world. Not only the Chinese civilization, but all the other civilization s on earth, are the results from human civilization. The ancient and continuous Chinese civilization, together with the colorful and profound Chinese culture, form a common cradle filled with rich history and tradition for the Chinese people. Higher education is a significant form of passing down the good culture and knowledge, while universities bear the mission of cultivating talents, leading ideas, and promoting the overall development of their students. To cultivate students with historical and culture education is a significant part of political and historical education in universities.Therefore, the study of historical and cultural education is of great value in pushing forward the establishment and development of university cultural education, promoting the essence of traditional history and culture, building a solid political and historical foundation for the students, as well as guiding the students into a correct understanding of the world, life, and values.Historical culture education is an important part and significant means of university students' ideological and political education. It is comprehensive, systematic, common, and is influential and attractive to the students. The combination of historical culture with theory greatly enhanced historical and cultural content in ideological and political education; the combination of historical culture with practice, greatly promoted the dynamic in ideological and political education; and the combination of historical culture with human development, greatly increased the efficiency in ideological and political education. To sufficiently use historical culture education is of great value in promoting students' historical and cultural virtue, and in the overall, in-depth, systematic progression in ideological and political education, and is helpful in building an efficient mechanism in university students' ideological and political education.The core of historical culture lies in history, with emphasis on the historical meaning of culture and the cultural meaning in history. Centered on history, and originated from culture, those two sides of historical culture are integrated throughout the overall development of history and culture. Historical culture education in universities is general and faces the common group. It refers to the historical culture education in all universities instead of one specific institution. The evidence of combined use of history and culture can be found in actual expressions and names of historic institutions. Therefore, the essence of historical culture, the diversity in education, actual expressions, and names of institutions sufficiently proved the reasonable existence of historical culture as a combined term.Based on Introduction, the thesis is composed of five parts. In Introduction, motivation and significance of the theme are explained, with illustration of the domestic and international current status in the field. Related terms are defined, such as culture, historical culture, cultural education, historical cultural education, etc.. Research methodology is also pointed out. In the First Chapter, values and meanings of historical cultural education in higher education are illustrated. The author believes that the core value of historical cultural education in higher education facilities lies in promoting the passing down of history and culture, building a historical and cultural foundation, cultivating the taste as well as enhancing the common understand of history and culture. Sensibility, social enlightenment, rich in culture, profound thinking reflect the value of historical cultural education in universities; rich sense of history, strong ability in reflection, powerful inspiring ability, and colorful diversity are the characteristics in historical cultural education. In the Second Chapter, ideological origins of historical and cultural education are traced. Theory of historical cultural education in Marxism is explained from the three perspectives from Marx and Engels, Lenin and Chinese Marxism; Chinese ancient wisdom is absorbed in the three levels of society rituals, country regulations and family traditions; western ideas are borrowed from the three perspectives of valuing development in history, focusing on harmony in culture, and advertising logic in education. In the Third Chapter, currents status is studied for the better understanding of historical cultural education. The author believes the advantages in historical cultural education manifest in the continuous building of national soft power, the demand of self-consciousness of national culture, personal desire in better understanding of the history and cultural, and the improved quality of historical cultural higher education. Mislead of historical nihilism, the lack of public knowledge, deviation of the talents standards, interference from the negative Internet information, and impact from multicultural information society is all of the challenges that we face.In the Fourth Chapter, basic contents of historical cultural education are clearly stated. The author states that the core content of historical cultural education ideas in Marxism lies in believing the human civilization as a continuous growing process, people are the creator of history, and history itself is the best textbook; disagree with harmony, self-reliance, hard work, unity, peace-loving, are the content of Chinese traditional culture and education; national salvation, national independence, reform and development, national revival, are part of China's modern history education; reliving the history of the revolution, bearing in mind the martyrs, carrying forward the fine traditions, learning from pioneers, advocating brilliant achievements, are the content of the Party's history of education; education on national history and policy conditions, is an integral part of the history and culture education content. In Chapter Five, implementation mechanism is explored for historical cultural education in universities. Historical cultural education in universities is a systematic project. We should adhere to the principles of integrating historical interpretation with leading ideas, classroom teaching with atmosphere influence, teaching and self learning, historical inheritance and innovation, as well as national perspective accompanied with international perspective, while effectively expanding ways of teaching, such as classroom, network platform, campus culture, performances and other useful ideas. And to comprehensively use books, lecturing, influence, practice and key point emphasis to cultivate a historical cultural education with coordinated efforts of family influence, university dominance, society supports, and personal consciousness.
