The Study Of Su Shi's Ecological Personality

Su Shi was a distinguished politician and social activist in BeiSong Dynasty.What's more,he had been honoring as a prime example of Chinese traditional culture,and had got outstanding achievements in poetry,calligraphy and drawing.His realm of life and personality had set a good example for modern people.Scholars generally concentrated on Confucianism,Buddhism and Taoism to analyze his character,by far.However their study points were over-simplification and had ignored any other details,and to a certain extent,the study had ignored the self integrity of Su Shi.So,I try to broaden the horizons,and to analyze Su's personality in terms of eco-civilization,then,to interpret Su's personality from three perspectives: nature,society and spirit.Though Su belonged to pre-modern era,his ecological personality will be significant for the building of ecological personality of modern people.From the viewpoint of nature,Su regarded nature as an organic integrity,got along well with nature,and set up an equal,friendly,harmonious relationship between human and nature.Su was inborn to love nature and be full of awe and worship of it.He was benevolent to all creatures and showed sympathy and appreciation to all plants and animals.In Su's opinion,the highest good is to respect the way of nature,so the highest good of human beings are to maintain the nature's state of self-being,self-contained and self-making.When facing nature,human beings should be “utter innocence” and “simple”,only by this way can we keep the self-contained state of nature and attain the realm of “union”,can we reach the state of symbiotic co-prosperity.Form the viewpoint of society,Su created a harmonious social atmosphere and established a friendly relations with people of different classes.When it comes to social management,Su had thrown himself into participating actively in politics and tried to saving the country and people,asserted to implement the benevolent policy of inaction,which was obey the notion of nature and of education significance.Su also had taken an active part in social practice,then realized the social value and pursued the inner freedom and fulfillment.When it comes to relationships,Su had set an example of harmonious co-existence,let the king be a king,the minister be a minister,gotten well along with colleagues,friends,partners and brothers,that's the personality charm of Su which will make the world a better place.The spiritual world of Su was alive and plentiful.His self-fulfillment kept pace with natural spirits and reached the realm of “the nature and man unites as one”.Su was an activist of politic,at a same time,he was in the state of living in seclusion,so no matter what he did,he could enjoy the freedom of inner: on the one hand,he absorbed in natural beauty;on the other hand,in order to take the responsibility of saving country and people,he refused to be a hermit.For one thing,he wandered in the palace of art,for another,objects had never enslaved him.Su had finished the sublimation of sociality and spirituality in natural environment by keeping the clarity of heart.What's more,Su had combined the “true” of Daoism and the “saint” of Confucianism with the “emptiness” of Buddhism to establish a new state of spirits and to transcend the traditional gap between body and mind,character and emotion,failure and success,becoming an official and withdrawing from society,life and death,then to realize the harmony and balance of spirit ecology.Su's ecological personality has a profound significance.In the modern world,there is a great ecological crisis.Our separation with nature;the isolation from person to person and the self-division have been the living dilemma of modern people.Su's plentiful personality does good to the remedy of modern people's inner limitations and the restoration of a new type of ecological personality.Su's life style is simple but plentiful,leisure and comfortable,diversified and harmonious,which can heal the psychiatric disorder of modern people,help people to regain the naive,simple,integrity and kindness,rebuild the consistency of physical and mental of self,recover the harmony between human beings and nature,so that we can make an ideal society,namely an ideal ecological society which can keep a balance between nature and humans,object and spirit,self and the other.
