A Theoretical Study On Mural Forms And Multi-Media Involvement

Today,with the rejuvenation of Chinese murals since 1979,contemporary mural art has experienced the new changes of urban architectural space,artistic conception and science and technology,traditional theories on mural study have been unable to explain the evolution of mural development,transformation of mural functions,and the diversification of mural forms.Contemporary murals are no longer confined to two-dimensional,flat,static painting form;instead,they have been developed into three-dimensional,dynamic and multiple forms.New concepts and new technologies have been adopted in mural creation with media involvement,which has resulted in the emergence of cross-disciplinary,multi-disciplinary mural works with integration of the characteristics of the times.In fact,applications of new materials,integrated devices,visual art,computerized new media and other new media have reached beyond the traditional narrative mode of murals,forming a multi-dimensional mural form.As the most fundamental carrier of murals,mural medium is one of the core problems in mural theoretical research and practice.Mural medium refers to the technology used by an artist to produce a work of mural to achieve its expressive function and diversify its modes.In this sense,the development of mural forms is in essence the evolution of mural media.The development and application of mural media have promoted the diversity and prosperity of murals in affecting the creation concepts,the narrative patterns and the expressive forms of murals.Therefore,it is safe to say the evolution of mural media synchronizes with the development of mural.This dissertation explores the phenomenon of the multi-mediainvolvement in mural creation and the diversification of mural forms in the evolution of contemporary Chinese murals and proposes that there are three phenomena of contemporary Chinese murals-the functional transformation of murals,the localization of murals and the foreignization of murals.It is concluded that the inheritance of mural tradition,the impact of artistic concepts,the application of scientific and technological means,and the restriction of architectural space are the basic reasons for the emergence of multi-media involvement in murals and multiple expression forms of murals.Through the study of multi-media involvement,narrative patterns and diverse forms in mural development,the author further analyses the causes of diversification of the contemporary Chinese mural paintings and predicts its future trend of developments.In this dissertation,“contemporary murals”,intentionally differentiated from “contemporary art”,refer to Chinese mural paintings created ever since 1979.This dissertation explores the essential and critical questions about media involvement and its influences in mural forms from the unique and objective perspective of mural medium;namely,the focus is on the forms of media,the ways of media involvement,the transformation of narrative modes,and the diversification of mural forms after media involvement.Begins with the concept of mural medium,analyzes the concept,its value and objective factors in multi-media involvement in murals and summarizes the classifications and characteristics of mural media and mural forms.The chapter examines and combs the evolutional history of the mural media and mural forms from the perspectives of theoretical study and actual practice.The paper analyzes the characteristics of mural media and mural forms in different times from three aspects: theinvolvement of new media,the expansion of media and the innovation of media.Beginning with the development of traditional media,Chapter makes a case analysis of the causes of functional transformation of contemporary murals,taking examples from outstanding artists' works.The paper analyzes the formation of the narrative transformation of mural paintings after the media involvement.Case analysis is made on murals to explore the causes of the foreignization of contemporary mural artmurals after the application and involvement of innovative media.This paper analyzes the phenomenon of multi media mural mural painting and the formation of multiple forms of mural painting,the last chapter summarizes the development of multi-media involvement and its effects on mural forms.Future-oriented predictions are made on the advancement of murals in the future based on the exploration of the contemporary mural forms and media involvements.
