Fung Yu-lan's Understanding Of Philosophy

What is philosophy?It's a must be faced question for every Chinese philosopher in 20th century.Fung Yu-lan is one among those who built their philosophy system,so it is also an important question for him.Fung Yu-lan's view of philosophy changes along his philosophy.While his philosophy is framed by his neo-Confiucianism(???),his view of philosophy is circled in Li(?).Before his neo-Confucianism,Fung Yu-lan thought that philosophical difference makes the differences between east and west culture.So philosophy aims to seek the 'Good' and to gain an ideal life.But when Fung built up his neo-Confucianism system,he thought that philosophy aims to seek 'Li'.Fung thought that there Li exists,so there must be 'philosophy' as Li.He called it'philosophy as such'.What philosophers do is to pursue this kind of philosophy.But,if philosophy aims to pursue 'Li',and what is the difference among science and logic and philosophy?Fung didn't think that they differ in Li's content.With the help of Wittgenstein's opinion,Fung thought Metaphysical proposition is a kind of analytic proposition.And what analytic proposition analyses is Li.So the difference between philosophy and science is that philosophy only admits Li while not dealing with the content of Li.The difference between philosophy and logic is that philosophy not only admits Li,but also admits the reality.As Wittgenstein found the mysterious items through seeking the nature of logic,Fung found that the objects of metaphysics can't be said when he pull the combination of philosophy and Li to its peak.But he already said the objects of metaphysics.So he called the way of speaking out the positive way of metaphysics,and the way of saying that it can't be said the negative way.Though the exploring of the negative way,Fung found that the sphere of living of being one with the Great Whole is gained not only by quitting thought and language,but also by acknowledged that there is no-object for pursuing.That is to say,if the goal of philosophy is to raise the level of one's spiritual world,there can't be philosophy as Li.By the end of the 40s,Fung went to the opposite side of his earlier opinion.Philosophy pursues the sphere of living of being one with the Great Whole,but this state of spirit is without any knowledge.So it is not possible for philosophy to seek the Li when it aims to improve the sphere of living.After the establishment of new China,Fung was facing the difficulty of explaining what Li means to sphere of living.In his later years,Fung agreed to Hegel,thought that philosophy is thinking with concepts.But only the concepts exercised by people who own them,they can be concrete.The improving of sphere of living needs philosophical concepts,otherwise it might be a void state.So the conclusion of Fung Yu-lan's view of philosophy is that philosophy is developing of conceptual thinking and the improving of sphere of living.
