The premise of this paper regards the establishment of national identity and foothold in local tradition as the core developmental direction of Chinese and South Korean sculptural practices in the 21 stCentury.Considering globalization today, some may think that the idea of turning back to national identity and local tradition is incompatible with present needs. But,with the previous reviews, whether there is any counsel of “wholesale westernization” hidden in the word “globalization” or not? At the beginning of the 20 th century,China and South Korea learned from the West and inevitably treated the Western world like a teacher.Since entering into the 21 st Century,we should ask whether or not continuing to advocate western standards is regressive.Based in these questions, this paper advocates that by restoring traditional sculpture practices and reconstructing the sculpture system based on traditional practices, new roads and more possibilities will open for developing Chinese and South Korean sculpture. The first chapter regards the fracture of the lineage of traditional sculptural practice as the main limitation to the development of both Chinese and South Korean sculpture. The transition from traditional society to modern society, which introduced western modern art education,is reputed as the fundamental cause for the current state of disconnection to traditional sculpture. In the second chapter, the paper sorts out the formation and development of Chinese and Korean modern sculpture and analyzes the distinct qualities of both sculptural styles.Using historical data related to the development of modern sculpture in China and South Korea, the third chapter divides the sculptural history of China and South Korea into several stages, discusses the exploration of national identity and tradition during the development of modern sculpture in these two countries, and briefly analyzes the relationship between time passage and the formation of an art trend. The last chapter suggests new possibilities for the development of sculpture in China and South Korea.Furthermore, this paper concretely proposes 21 st Century sculptural development in China and South Korea to be oriented by the establishment of the national identity and foothold in local tradition. This proposal should be implemented through a modern transformation of traditional sculpture and improvements in the education system.
