Study On Fang Hui's Poetry Criticism

Fang Hui is a very famous poetry critics,poet and scholar from the end of Song Dynasty to the beginning of Yuan Dynasty.His works of poetry criticism mainly include Ying Kui Lv Sui,Evaluation o f the Selected Poems of Yan Bao Xie,Tong Jiang Collocation and Tong Jiang Sequal.Differing from the past research which put more focus on Ying Kui Lv Sui,this paper tries to use its content on poetry criticism as a whole to study.This paper consists of seven chapters.The introduction outlines achievements and shortcomings of the study on Fang Hui.From the first chapter to the seventh chapter in the text,we have a comprehensive study of the works,origin,formation process,theory,practice,gains and losses and influence of Fang Hui's poetry criticism.And we form the full view of Fang Hui's poetry criticism.We think,as Confucian culture inhabited his mind,Fang Hui especially rated Zhu Xi,the famous neo-confucianism of Song Dynasty,who is considered as the inheritor of Confucius by him.Fang Hui's poetry criticism has many characteristics of neo-confucianism thought of song dynasty.If we put his poetry criticism to the history background of that time and have a research,it is not hard to see that the origin of his poetry criticism has closed connections with his family education and the books he read.Fang Hui particularly expounds the influence of Tiao Xi Yu Yin Cong Hua to himself.His poetry criticism has experienced different courses,from having the method to having no method,from thinking highly of Han Wei and Jin dynasty,Tang dynasty,"the one founder and three epigones" to developing a style of his own.His poetry criticism has various reasons,the most fundamental motivation is because of the consciousness of fearing the passing of time and the desire and pursuit for immortality.Fang Hui's innovation in poetry criticism theory is that some new concepts are put out:The first is"the one founder and three epigones" and"the School of Lao Du".Between Tang poetry and Song poetry,"The one founder and three epigones" that Fang Hui put out shows his orientation of the poems of Song poetry,and "the School of Lao Du" gets rid of the limitation of the narrow sectarian barriers.He maximized the eclecticism to finally leave us a set of universalstandards of learning poems of poetry.The second is that Fang Hui had a new integration and summary to the previous theories of high style,sound words,living sentence,stubborn words and variant,gave them the new connotation and finally made them become an important part of his poetry criticism theory.The third is that he put out his own standard of poetry criticism.His basic standard of poetry criticism is "Han Wei Jin as the model of the ancient poem,three hundred and five poems and Li Sao as the progenitor," "poets in Tang dynasty as the model of Metrical Verse,and Lao Du as the progenitor","Law for bone,meaning the arteries and veins,word for eye".In actual poetry criticism,"high style" is considered as the highest standard,with many other specific standards as a supplement.In the poetry criticism method,there are roughly six kinds of methods in his poetry criticism.These are traditional methods.While in specific criticism,he tended to be integrated the different methods to achieve the best effect of poetry criticism.Through the six kinds of poetry criticism methods that Fang Hui used,it is not hard to see the richness and diversity of his poetry criticism methods.Fang Hui had rich poetry criticism practice,with comments from the book of Shi Jing,Li Sao to the poet's poems of his generation,and these comments are the embodiment of his poetry criticism theory.This not only can let a person see the origin relationship between Song poetry and the book of Shi Jing,Li Sao,Han Wei and six dynasties poetry,Tang poetry,but also can let us know the relations between different poets.This dissertation regards time as order and teases out Fang Hui's poetry criticism practice.we can see the pertinence of Fang Hui's poetry criticism that incorporates things of diverse nature to eliminate defects as well as the integrity of it that gives consideration to the different content,styles and forms.The poetry criticism,despite the different poetry criticism standards to different periods of poetry,reflects its succession to the tradition of expressing aspiration and emotion of Shi Jing and Li Sao.Fang Hui's poetry criticism practice reflects its distinctive features of his poetry criticism.First,Fang Hui improves the status of Jiang xi School of Chinese Poetry and belittle the value of School in late Tang Dynasty in poetry criticism.Second,Fang Hui attaches great importance to practice and despises principle of poetry.Third,he Pays more attention to the relationships of the origin and development and refrains from empty talk on poets and poetry.In short,Fang Hui's poetry criticism plays an important role in the history of poetry criticism because of his innovation and integration,which has made some new contributions to ancient chinese poetry criticism and therefore has a profound influence to us.
