Based on summarization of literature at home and broad, the study is carried out through threemethods. First, by the method of literature review, the theoretical basis of college student affairsadministrator’s career development is analyzed. Secondly, with the application of case study andcomprehensive analysis method, the process of college student affairs administrator’s careerdevelopment in America is studied, including pre-employment training, continuing education, careerdevelopment and career development management. Finally, through comparative approach, the studyfocuses on the basic features, challenges and trends of college student affairs administrator’s careerdevelopment. Besides, the implication for the professionalization construction of college studentaffairs administrator’s career development in China is also mentioned. The main research contentsand conclusions are as follows:1. The study of theoretical basis of college student affairs administrator’s career development.In this paper, the study of theoretical basis of college student affairs administrator’s careerdevelopment is conducted from different theoretical perspectives, such as higher educationadministration, management philosophy, occupational sociology, adult education and humanresource management. It includes professional-professional integration theory, the basic principles ofcareer development, the philosophical foundation for career development, the professional identitytheory, the career development stage theory, the adult learning theory, the competency theory and theconstruction of learning organization. The above theories give answers to why student affairs staffneeds career development and how to guide professional development. The theoretical and practicalvalue runs through the whole process of student affairs staff’s career development.2. The study of the process of college student affairs administrator’s professionalizationdevelopment in America. The paper analyzes the impact of the changes in American highereducation development and student affairs evolving paradigm for student affairs administrator’sprofessionalization development. The paper concludes that student affairs administrator’s careerdevelopment in America is closely related to higher education and student affairs in America. Theestablishment of modern university system and the popularization of higher education are importanthistorical conditions to promote the development of student affairs administrator’s careerdevelopment. Meanwhile, the professionalization of student affairs and the staff’s diligent pursue fortheir professional status is inexhaustible power to promote the professional development.3. The study of specialized personnel training of college student affairs in America. Thepre-employment training of college student affairs professionals in America is studied from threeangles which are student affairs professional training process, student affairs graduate education anddoctoral graduate education. The article thinks that the historical documents which are promulgatedby national professional associations have played an important influence on student affairsprofessional training. In the past50years, the postgraduate training standards of student affairsadministration have been developed, while the doctoral education is still in the process ofstandardization.4. The study of continuing education of college student affairs administrator in America. Basedon the necessity and importance of continuing education for college student affairs administrator, thepaper studies he basic principles of continuing education, its level, its type, mode and ways ofcontinuing education. The practice exploration and the current problems of continuing education arealso discussed in paper. The continuing education of college student affairs administrator in America has clear hierarchy and different ways. Its diversity and multi-mode are all its notable features, butthere are still some practical problems, such as lack of system and standardization.5. The study of career development of college student affairs administrator in America. Startfrom the concepts of the new professional, the mid-level and senior student affairs professionals, thepaper expounds the roles and responsibilities of different groups, occupational competency research,professional development content and approach, as well as different groups’ professional traininginstitutions and training programs. Since the roles, responsibilities, competency requirements andcareer development needs are different for administrators in each level in the field of student affairs,any professional development programs shall consider different competency requirements anddevelopment needs.6. The study of career development management of college student affairs administrator inAmerica. This paper studies the roles and responsibilities of mid-level managers, senior managersand professional organizations from the description of the meaning of career developmentmanagement for student affairs administrators. The management strategies and implementationstrategies of student affairs administrator career development are also illustrated in the paper. Then,why the career development needs management and how to manage are answered logically.Finally, based on the above research, the paper compares and analyzes the similarities anddifferences between student affairs administrator in China and in America. The existing problems incareer development of student affairs administrator in China and the implication from the Americanstudent affairs administrator’s career development are also mentioned in this paper.
