The objective of this research was to analyze and review the works of the Buryat scientist N.O. Sharakshinova, who collected and studied the folklore of Mongolian and Buryat people. Sharakshinova is an eminent scientist, who contributed greatly to the understanding and analysis of cultural and linguistic heritage of Buryats and Mongolians. Scientific works of N.O. Sharakshinova include the complete history of Buryat folklore and literature development in the twentieth century.My dissertation consists of the introduction, four main chapters, the conclusion chapter, seven appendix and bibliography.The introduction sets out the goal and objectives, theoretical and practical significance of this work. Previous studies and research methods are also presented.In the first chapter, an in-depth analysis of N. O. Sharakshinova’s life is presented. It is based on a wide range of data, including some recently discovered materials, which are just about to be published for the first time. Sharakshinova’s role in modern understanding of Mongolian culture and literature are examined through the lenses of her personal life, education, her scientific endeavors and social activities.N.O. Sharakshinova’s views on the Buryat folklore are discussed in the second chapter. Her analyses span many genres of Buryat folklore, such as myths, fairy tales, stories, proverbs, puzzles, and songs. She has used a wide range of materials that are brought out from real life and made a detailed analysis of her numerous observations. Many of her writings haven’t lost their value and are still in high demand among those studying these topics.The third chapter contains a review of previous research and existing literature on the topic. N. O. Sharakshinova has analyzed the works of the Buryat writer H. Namsaraev, one of the founders of Buryat literature. The influence of Russian literature on contemporary Buryat literature is examined in the study.The fourth chapter examines Sharakshinova’s research techniques and methodology and compares those to existing theories and concepts of Russian folklore studies. This chapter also summarizes her contribution to the collection of Buryat folklore materials and her role in the establishment of contemporary school of Mongolian studies in Russia.The conclusion provides a synthesis of this dissertation research. Findings from this work demonstrate that N.O. Sharakshinova is the true expert and one of the leading scientists who played a major role in preserving and understanding the cultural heritage of Mongolian and Buryat people.
