Abstract/Summary:
In the modern world, people build consciousness–which they use to direct theirbehavior–by perceiving information. In this sense,“information design” createsanother world parallel to the real world. And in the world governed and shaped by“design”, designers constantly preset and guide the behavior to improve the social life, and in this process, create new things to shape the future of this world.Considering the contemporary society’s growing need for information, this papersets forth the “collective intelligence” perspective to investigate into the publicbehavior’s demand for information visualization in the context of “collectiveunconsciousness” in addition to related design principle, basic structure and formfeatures of information visualization. It addresses the relationship betweeninformation visualization and public behavior by starting from five key points toinformation visualization. With emphasis placed on analyzing how visual informationorganizes and influences people’s choice of behavior, it points out the behavioralorganizability and non-organizability in public space of information-targeting groups, and stresses that a trade-off between such organizability and non-organizability is justthe major driver behind efficient thinking in information visualization design. Inconclusion, through an analysis of the formation of information visualization designand its influence on public behavior, the paper proposes monitoring indicators relatingto the functional relationship between awareness of and social demand forinformation visualization design, and on the basis of this puts forward ideas on thetheoretical improvement of information visualization design. The discussion on the relationship between information visualization design andpublic behavior is not something new, but both the development of modern societyand the extension in connotations of design have made the concepts of the two toolsincreasingly closer to each other and intersect in new ways. Though unable todetermine behavioral tendencies of urban groups, information visualization design isfundamental to the future IT-based development of a people-first society. More andmore designers and social organizations are channeling their wisdom and energy intothe study of information visualization, because it is just such seemingly trivial andeven trifling visual “tools” design that influences and organizes in every aspect of lifethe social behavior of people, gives common everyday life the qualities of liberty andreason, and eventually allows every individual to behave properly as far as possible.
