Vietnam and China are the two neighboring countries having a relationship and a long tradition of friendship. Before independence, a northern part of the territory of Vietnam was under the jurisdiction of the Chinese feudal dynasties. For over a thousand years since Vietnam’s independence, the two countries have had close diplomatic ties. From the Qin dynasty so far a lot of Chinese have migrated to Vietnam, thus causing a significant influence on the history of Vietnam in terms of political, economic, cultural, and literary not outside of them. Vietnamese literature and Chinese literature has a inseparable relationship. An interesting coincidence between Lu Xun, one of China’s greatest writers of the20th century, and Nam Cao, an outstanding writer of literary realism movement in Vietnam, is that issues which Lu Xun mentioned in his works in the period of1918to1925was also mentioned of Nam Cao’s writings from1930to1945. Most famous works of the two writers are novels with the main theme of farmers and intellectual elements. Many of them have become masterpieces of Vietnam and China novels.The characters under the pens of Lu Xun and Nam Cao are not from the same country, but they have the same plight including the farmers, the poor women and the intellectuals with intricate destinies, basically are the similarities and differences worth comparing. By collecting materials, using the analysis method and the parallel comparative method in the research literature, this thesis studies characters in some of the most representative works of Lu Xun and Nam Cao with the view to learning more about the tendency of choosing characters, the descriptive art method, so as to find out the similarities and differences in the world of the characters under the pens of two writers, especially to focus on the two character images of the farmers and intellectuals elements.The thesis consists of five parts:The first part mainly refers to the purposes and meaning of research, and the current status of researching the topic. The second part introduces the birth of both Lu Xun and Nam Cao, and then studies the relationship between the two authors.The third part compares the trend of selecting characters in the works of Lu Xun and Nam Cao, including two iconic characters who are the farmers and the intellectual elements. For the character image of farmers, in addition to the poor naive characters, the thesis focuses on analyzing the honest farmers who are turned into scoundrels, represented by the AQ in "AQ series" and Chi Pheo in the short story "Chi Pheo". For the intellectual elements, the thesis concentrates on analyzing not only the tension of the psychological conflicts and the tragedy of their lives but also their relationships with the farmers and the awareness of the revolutionary path.The fourth part compares the art of describing characters’psychology between Lu Xun and Nam Cao, including the implication for the description of the character’s eyes and the method of describing the character’s inner monologue.The fifth part refers to the reason of the similarities and differences in Lu Xun and Nam Cao’s novels.The final part concludes the whole thesis, points out its shortcomings, and then works out research methods later.
