The renewal of pragmatism began with the decline of analytic aesthetics and thedifficult development of aesthetics. American Jewish esthetician Richard Shusterman isthe focus character of the renewal of pragmatism. He realized that it’s useless to solvethe basic problem of aesthetics and arts simply depending on the terminologicalclarification and the analysis of words. So he regressed to philosophical traditioncharacterized by Dewey and attempted to find a rational path for the development ofaesthetics and arts in the process of the restoration of relations between humanexperience and aesthetics and arts,parted from analytic philosophy definitely and fellback on pragmatism. It is commendable for Shusterman to confront to the survivalplight of aesthetics and arts in the era of"the end of arts"and the deposed beauty throughthe method of the renewal of pragmatism. Hence it’s important and valuable to analyzethe ideology and construction method of Shusterman’s pragmatic aesthetics.There is irrefutable kinship between Shusterman’s ideology which is regarded asclassical pragmatism by himself and the representative of Dewey’s pragmatism.Hisconsciously regression to Dewey’s pragmatism is not total and uncritical acceptance butto construct a new field of inter-sexuality pragmatism through the method of enrollingcompositions of other pragmatism ideologists extensively and to Dewey’s pragmatismas the core. The purpose of my thesis is to discuss that how Shusterman’s ideologyinherited and developed Dewey’s classical pragmatism through the method ofinter-sexuality construction to achieve aesthetic renewal of pragmatism.The thesis is composed by three parts as introduction,main body and conclusion.In the part of introduction, two keywords and their relationship as "inter-sexualityconstruction" and "aesthetic renewal" are explained. Inter-sexuality construction,iscalled "inclusively disjunctive" by Shusterman,is a way to confrontation to the mode ofbinary opposition of either P or Q through the method of the mode of both P and Q.Inter-cultural stance embodied by the method of inter-sexuality construction is thefoundation of Shusterman ideology. So called "renewal" is to renew the traditionalpragmatism represented by Dewey,which specifically means the renewal of classical philosophy idea of life philosophy,aesthetic experience and arts. The relationshipbetween inter-sexuality construction and aesthetic renewal is that inter-sexualityconstruction as Shusterman’s cultural position is the means of aesthetic renewal andaesthetic renewal is the purpose of inter-sexuality construction.There is simpleintroduction to Shusterman’s and Dewey’s lifetime,research status and kinship.The main body of the thesis is composed by five chapters. The context ofpragmatism aesthetic renewal is analyzed in the first chapter and the conclusion is thatShusterman’s pragmatism aesthetic renewal constructed on the basis of value shift fromEurocentrism to pluralism,from contradiction and split to integration and unity,fromstressing on logical analysis to stressing on life-practice. How Shusterman inherited anddeveloped Dewey’s ideology in order to realize pragmatism aesthetic renewal isdiscussed from the second chapter to the fifth chapter.The inter-sexuality constructionof practical stance of philosophy is discussed in the second chapter. Shusterman whoinherited Dewey’s anti-essentialism position of philosophical realism and practicalphilosophy position,both stressed on the mobility,openness and contingency of real,and human action and purpose prior to truth. Practice prior to theory. The terminalpurpose of theory and practice is not themselves,but to change human life. In theaspect of life philosophy,Shusterman surpass Dewey. Dewey just explained theintimate connection between philosophy and life without further explanation to theintension of life philosophy. Shusterman put forward the category of life philosophyand the ideology that construct philosophical life between philosopher produce abstracttest of theory and inter-sexuality construction of embodiment life. It is discussed thathow Shusterman attack dichotomy of nature and history,body and soul and constructunity empiricism inter-sexually of them. It is discussed the problem of concept of artsin the forth and fifth chapter that how Shusterman constructed the concept of "arts asdramatization" between experience and practice,naturalism and historism through themethod of inter-sexuality of inclusively disjunctive by dialectically critique to theconcept of arts of Dewey,developed high art and popular art of Dewey’s theory to dualdefend them and practiced reintegration of arts.It is discussed in the conclusion to briefly summarize and evaluate thesignificance and value of construct idea that Shusterman inherit and developed Dewey’spragmatism critically through the method of inter-sexuality construction to realize aesthetic renewal. Besides the sense of mission when Shusterman confronted aestheticpredicament showed,it’s significant methodologically and true aesthetic value toconstruct aesthetic ideology through the method of inter-sexuality construction. Hisinclusively disjunction of both P and Q is not relativism but dialectically criticismdepend on analyze,compare and critique objectively. It’s a way to present inclusiveacademic mind,open academic horizon and forceful academic bearing of inter-cultureconstruct.
