Purpose:To demonstrate the incidence of posterior capsule rupture during the Phacoemulsification of cataract and to find the risk facts of the complication using the database of the eye center of the second affiliated hospital of Zhejiang University. Methods:This retrospective chart review comprised cataract phacoemulsification performed from January1,2009to December31,2009,3186eyes in3004patients. The incidence of posterior capsule rupture and the risk factors were the main outcomes. The variables of patient age and sex; laterality of surgical eye; pre-operation intraocular pressure and vision; post-operation vision; the nuclear stages, presence of diabetes mellitus, glaucoma, hypertension and other diseases; history of vitrectomy the surgeons were collected and analyzed. Results:Male, the nuclear stage Ⅳ and more, pre-operation vision less than20/200, and history of vitrectomy were all statistically significantly overrepresented in the posterior capsule rupture group. The same was true for eyes operated on by surgeons with the least experience. The post visual acuity of the posterior capsule rupture group was poorer than the control group. Conclusion:Early operating should be considered to prevent the cataract from becoming a poor surgical risk. Improving training of surgeons could further reduce the frequency. Preoperatively identifying cataract cases with the identified risk factors and allocating them to surgeons with the longest experience could reduce the number of capsule complications.
