With the rapid development of computer science and e-commerce, people require more convenient, more flexible and less costly way to acquire the services they need. As a new technology, web service can meet the requirement of flexibility and application integration for users and enterprises, with self-contained, publishable, and invokable features, and become the mainstream technology of web-based application development. However, there are different ways for developers to understand the world, together with distributive and autonomous properties of web service, web service can be defined by different ways, in despite of some underlying standards like WSDL, SOAP, and UDDI. Consequently, heterogeneity may occur both at syntactic and semantic layer, data and behavior layer, functional and non-functional layer. The mediation between heterogenous web services becomes a significant research issue. This paper only discusses the behavior heterogeneity in web services composition. Following are main content of this paper.First, based on the analysis of web service behavior, a classification of most kinds of behavioral mismatches is introduced. Then, a comprehensive solution approach, including checking of heterogeneous problems, construction of mediators, verification of mediation effect, was present. After that, a determination method of services compatibility and a series of heterogeneity check algorithms were proposed. In order to support mediation of incompatible services, we also proposed a quantitative approach to measure the compatibility degree of services based on the check results. Afterwards, several basic mediator templates and composition method of advanced mediator were given. Last, we conclude our finding and main innovations, pointed out future research directions.
