Research On The Coupling Between Mega Sports Events And Urban Development

Under the background of economic globalization, sports events have become a strategic tool which is used for enhancing competitiveness of the city and achieving city government’s goal. Nowadays, more and more cites take organizing sport events as the goal of urban development. However, how to understand the relationship between urban development and sport events is becoming a valueable problem. Based on the perspective of coupling, this paper accroding to the theories of sports science, urban economics, urban planning, and institution economics, have used the methods of literature, expert consultation, empirical analysis and quantity statistics, tried to explore the innate laws from the histories relationships between sports events and urban development, the reasons why modern city choosed to hold sports events, the interaction mechanism of urban and sports events and their coupling coordination degree. On this basis, through empirical analysis of2010Guangzhou Asian Games as a case.The main conclusions are as follows:First, the historical evolution between urban development and sport events show that special city events in human society since the date of birth and urban development are closely linked. With the changes in the function and status of the city, sport events in the role of the urban development also will be different. The relationship between has roughly gone to sport events successfully held city development stage and the stage of development "urban development".Second, the generation mechanism of the modern city choose sport events: First, under the context of globalization, urban competition and urban economic transformation needs sports event; Second, modern cities driven by the forces of globalization, decentralization and marketization appeared corporate goverance tendency. Sports events became a strategic tool for city marketing; For Chinese city, city government behavior exist opportunistic tendencies in transition era, in order to obtain political incentives and economic incentives, sport events as "an excuse" to find collective action for the government.Third, the coupling relationship of between sports events and urban development is reflected in the interaction and coordination process. The constraints of the city of the sports events:the city government, the urban hard power and urban soft power. Among of them, the China city government plays a decisive role in the selection decision sports events. The city’s comprehensive power determines the type, size and level of sports events. The effect of sports events impact on urban development are mainly to promote economic growth, shaping urban culture, expanding the influence of the city, and improve urban spatial structure.Fourth, sports events are urban development’s catalyst.
