There had never been any large republic before the 1787 America’s constitution, which caused by many aspects. The large republic in discussion was under suspicion and criticism from the anti-Federalist even in the argument of constitution. But it is the vigorous argument that makes us clearly recognized the base of political philosophy needed by the large-scale republic, the scale problem faced by it and the necessary institutional arrangement that can solve the problems. The problem of national scale is closely related to political philosophy completely showed up in the discussion of constitution. Generally, the different options between anti-Federalist and Federalist in the concept of politics, the start point and support of republic determine their views on national scale. In this sense, political philosophy is the foundation of the large democratic republic. In the discussion of America’s constitution, we can find a brand new form of government—the democratic republic. The democratic republic here is not the republic in traditional sense, but it is a democracy in essence. However, this kind of democracy does face many difficulties for a nation in large-scale, which include the conflicts between the enrolment of citizens and the scale of representative organization, conflicts between the centralized administrative system and social multi-interests, and problems of the regulation to political rights. Opposite to anti-Federalist’s insistence in small nation, Federalist thought that appropriate system design could overcome the difficulties brought by national large-scale faced for the democratic republic. These system designs for them include representative, federalism and separation of powers.Contrary to traditional views, the Federalist not only recognized the benefits to democratic republic brought by large nation but found the solutions to the problems brought by it. In a word, large nation associating together with suitable political system brings out the best in each other in the Federalist’s mind, which has become a model of good governance for large nation in the Republic Chronicle.
