The Intertextuality of Architecture and Image —— A Cross-disciplinary Study based on Phenomenological Pondering is my dissertation for Doctor degree on architecture, which delves the relation between architecture and image systematically and comprehensively. Based on the method of essential intuition from phenomenology,the author thinks the intertextuality exist in architecture and image, so to clarify the intertexuality between architecture in image as well as to clear the intersubjectivity between image in architecture, ultimately to seek the contradictoriness and commonness of both, aspiring to create a new subject——Architecture-image ology.The study includes seven chapters: Ⅰ) Conspectus, Ⅱ) Introduction, Ⅲ) Intertexuality——Architecture in image, Ⅳ)Intersubjectivity——Image in architecture,Ⅴ)Contradictoriness and oneness for both, Ⅵ) Quantitative research,Ⅶ)Conclusion.After evaluating the pith and limitations of phenomenology objectively as analyzing dialectically, the article definite “architecture” and “image” again, and then lead “intertextuality” into the study and divide it to two dimensions: one is“intertexuality”, another is “intersubjectivity”, to summarize the relation between architecture and image. Author believe that architecture in image embodies chiefly the intertexuality, so it needs to dissect the discourse transformation when architecture entered into image from 15 angels of view, from buildings in photography, buildings in film and buildings in television. It can to find out a construction of architectural symbol in image’s text, to generalize a possibility alternative of both see another as own text,especially to epitomize an interchangeability for text of both. On the other hand, imagein architecture embodies chiefly the intersubjectivity, so it needs to dissect it based on a pluralistic classification, from dwelling-living room, public architecture, movie theater,fine art museum, subway, historical cultural ruins, landscape, power’s buildings-assembly hall, vernacular architecture, city-street and digital architecture,which are 13 angels of view. It can to find out element’s constitution, language’s construct, aesthetic connotation even and social cultural value, to generalize a possibility both are been as an alternative subject meanwhile, especially to epitomize a interchangeability for subject of text. Whatever to see from text or from subject,architecture and image always permeate and supply mutually, so author contrast and compare both deeply, to explore the similarities and differences between architectural art and image art, along with architectural art and image art, to point out many tactics how to outstand architecture adequately when directors creating images, to enumerate many ways how to use image skillfully when architect designing or planning, because in fact the context just is the characterization intention for two intertextualities between architecture and image. However, academe still could not recognize the profound relation that lies in both before phenomenology came into architecture field, therefore only can phenomenology grasp and command various theories, to illuminate identity and sameness for both. Architecture means image, as well as image means architecture,which is so clear and accurate only depending on phenomenology to comprehend.Aforementioned should to be attributed to qualitative research. To evidence those solidly, this paper designed and finished over 17 social investigations, from Xi’an,Beijing, China to New York, USA, facing to multifarious testee with various social attributes, going deep into field on the spot, to collect data widely, even to analyze them in statistics precisely and objectively. Based on these quantitative research, the author has constructed three mathematical modes for “architectural design how to utilize and reference image, vise versa, to embody intertextuality of both”, to offer a scientific guide to the two with other scopes nears to both in applied practically.In presence or absence, in visible or invisible, in to see or to be seen, in I or in Me,architecture and image arrive in amalgamation withal inter-consistency via symbiosis concurrence, which is architecture-image ology’s space for living. As it is image often is out of image, space often is in space, and space is limitless and lasting in image andimage.As one study focus on basic theory, holding on the “ Epoché- experience- think-Self-evident truth / Epoché- Erfahrung- denken- selbstverst?ndliche Wahrheit” that is the pivotal methods of phenomenology, this dissertation depends on solid cultural accumulation in humanities especially in communication science and analyzes architecture withal image cross-disciplinarily, trying to renovate theories of architecture to some extent.
