The Han Dynasty portrait refers to the images on the tomb, ancestral temple, the coffin, and Shi que of Han Dynasty. These images profoundly and comprehensively show the ideology, cultural significance, and folk beliefs of Han Dynasty people, in which the auspicious concept is the most important. Although it can be traced back to ancient times, the auspicious concept has become a popular social consciousness in the Han Dynasty, and it showed richly in the Han Dynasty portrait.Study on auspicious patterns helps us to deeply understand the cultural concept of ancient China art, and the folk belief which is showed by China design. In this paper, a "pattern" problem in art design is proposed, and several typical patterns of auspicious patterns in Han portrait are studied. "Pattern" shows how to grasp a manifestation of the world, and it is a product of the subjective understanding of the objective world. So ―pattern‖ is presented by a series of the pedigree and systematic design patterns, which are simple and concise and often become the symbols of how human beings understand the world.According to the ancient ―heaven, earth, and human‖ three talents, Qin and Han Dynasty cosmic symbolism, and the study of the Han Dynasty Chenwei, the paper discusses and summaries macroscopically the scheme performance and whole image of Han Dynasty portrait and then classifies them in genealogy. The paper puts the auspicious schemata into three areas which are heaven, earth and personnel. After that, the typical auspicious schemata of Chinese portrait are summarized, classified, analyzed, synthesized and demonstrated. The significance and value of the specific schema are discussed under the comparison of character with graph, and supported by the literature and archaeological materials.In analyzing heaven auspicious schema, the paper believes that the celestial phenomena schema in Han Dynasty portrait is in the effect of "telepathy between heaven and man" concept, is the heaven on the meaning of astrology, is, and is the result of people looking up the celestial phenomena. From the schema design, the celestial phenomena schema is the symbolic design expression of the auspicious relationships between heaven and man. And it is also a relic of the wisdom of ancient witchcraft in Han Dynasty portrait. In this paper some specific celestial auspicious schema, such as too much of a cult, Beidouxing gentleman, Basu, Sixiang worship, dragon and Phoenix fly, sun Tong Hui, Riyuehebi etc. are discussed..In the A’s schema, worship of Zhouyi ―generosity, and benevolence‖ of the earth psychology is discussed, and it is found that the mascot is an essential item of the human survival. The paper classifies mascots into two groups: animal and plant. Under such logical framework, specific animal images are discussed which can make people pursue good fortune and avoid disaster. The animals include kylin, dragon, phoenix, fox, Bijian beast and so on. This paper discusses the plant portraits auspicious schema from the primitive belief of original spring plant worship such as Jiahe, Ganoderma lucidum, the knot wood, Mi pod, the wood, pine, cypress and so on. The paper holds that animals and plants acquired auspicious meaning because they are associated with human being value, which produced great influence on ancient design ideas. Animals and plants in Chinese ancient design contain politics, culture and folklore significance, which eventually are turned into form symbol in design. Auspicious schemata of human being are discussed which is reflected in human being survival mode such as belief in gods, worship in heroes, and common people lives. Specifically speaking, they are fairy tale of Queen Mother of the West and King Father of the East, the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors legend, Zhougong assisting King Cheng story, Confucius meeting Lao-tzu moral implication and so on. The paper holds that human being is the topic of the auspicious schemata of the Han Dynasty. Heaven and earth auspicious schemata are meaningful only in human being things. Human beings not only pursue auspiciousness and goodness but also avoid filth and evil. For this reason, the paper also discusses witchcraft ceremony, exorcise dance, animal head applique holding rings schemata.The paper holds that the main content of Han Dynasty Portrait is human being auspicious concept which is reflected in the design idea of that time. The most important in art design is schema which should be simple to reflect idea in concrete art presentation. This is the ancient wisdom of Chinese art design idea which is an inspiration to today‘s art design.
