This thesis focuses on the relationship between evolution of Chinese language and social changes based on six kinds of newly developing styles since modern times, which are the xinmin style, the new poetry, the new folk song, Dazibao, new odes and weibo. On one hand, the thesis discusses the interactive relationship between the various styles and social changes at that time to highlight the internal connection between style evolution and social changes. On the other hand, the thesis analyzes the characteristics of styles from the perspectives of material structure and language elements such as voice, written language, vocabulary, sentence structure, grammar and rhetoric. This thesis argues that the common characteristics of all kinds of language elements is not only the prerequisite condition of what style is but also determines the style and feature of all kinds of styles. Researches on evolution of Chinese style can not avoid these elements but has to analyze and summarize the style elements so as to clearly grasp the distinctive features of the newly developing styles, discover the internal language reasons of the style evolution and expound the style evolution. The thesis explores the interactive relationship between various styles and social changes from two perspectives. On one hand, the thesis demonstrates that the social change is the main reason for the style evolution; On the other hand, the thesis analyses the promotion of newly developing styles to social changes. To be sure, the so-called "promotion" in this paper includes both positive and negative aspects. It is obvious that the styles such as the xinmin body, the new poetry, the new odes, weibo all play positive role to social changes while the new folk songs and posters play negative role due to their associated negative nature of "social changes". Because the object of this research is styles rather than social changes, so the negative effect is just briefly involved. The main conclusions of this thesis is: the social change is the essential reason of the style evolution, which has its own rules to follow. It is the important task of social linguistics to reveal the social reason of the style evolution, explore the law of the style evolution and describe the style characteristics of the newly developing style.
