The theory of language behavioural norm was first proposed by Nigerian linguist Bamgbose to refer to a set of behavioural norm relevant to verbal behavior. This theory was introduced to China by Mr. Dai Zhaoming, who also proposed to use the concept of appropriateness to analyze language behavior. This paper defined language behavioural norm as "the behavioural norm that people follow when using language in communications”, and carries out theoretical research from both micro and macro perspectives.From macro perspective, language behavioural norm can be divided into two categories: Spontaneous Language Behavioural Norm and Written Language Behavioural Norm. Spontaneous language behavioural norm refers to the implicit language behavioural norm that forms naturally inside groups of certain social background. This is a natural expression when people spontaneously comply with others in the same language society to reach the same purpose. Spontaneous language behavioural norm is a kind of unwritten language behavioural norm. Written language behavioural norm refers to the norm established by the government’s chief departments or social organizations with the purpose to restrain people’s language behavior. The purpose is to avoid the adverse consequences caused by improper language behavior, and the ultimate goal is to realize appropriateness. Overall, Written language behavioural norm is made on the basis of spontaneous language behavioural norm, with the goal of guiding and constraining the communicators to use language more appropriately.This paper puts forward a theoretical framework to analyze, test and guide whether the two language behavioral norms are reasonable from the perspective of micro linguistics, and introduces the concept of “Language-Vector” and uses it as the tool to analyze “appropriateness”. Language performance is composed of five observing items: the item of relationship, the item of requirements, the item of attitude, the item of adjustment, and the item of intervention. The use of these five items in language determines the language performance grade of language behavior. Then the language performance grade will receive “communication effect grade” through context factors, i.e. the status of both parties of the communications, benefits from communication, the impact of communication circumstance and the justice of communication.The paper conducts an extensive survey on spontaneous language behavioural norm and written language behavioural norm in Chinese language society, and carries out description and analysis of the two norms with “Language-Vector – appropriateness” method. It objectively reflects the language stage of the current society and proposes reasonable suggestions on the development and implementation of society-established language behavioural norm.
