Shanghai Literature in the ninth period of1994publishes the Essay and Awards Announcement of New Citizen Fiction Exhibition, which claims that Shanghai Literature unites Foshan Literature and Art to solicit novels, grandly sets up the special column of New Citizen Fiction. In the course of New Citizen Fiction Exhibition, which lasts two or three years, nearly one hundred short and middle novels are published; dozens of new citizen novelists appear. In the drive of New Citizen Fiction Exhibition, a large number of literary works and writers emerge, which reflect the new citizen’s daily life and emotional experiences. These two special columns create and lead the developing trend of the ninety’s city literature. New generation writers (or late generation writers) and later beauty writer group is one of the representatives, it is obvious that whose creative style and narrative way benefit from those two columns. The object of this paper focuses on those novels, which are published in Shanghai Literature and Foshan Literature and Art, and the main writers, who appear in New Citizen Fiction column, and those works in the same period, which describe citizen’s daily life and city scenery.The reason why we choose New Citizen Fiction as the object of this paper is mainly that China has been a rural society for a long time, the twentieth Century Chinese Literature cultivated by local Chinese is very local. In this context. New Citizen Fiction, which appears in the middle of90’s and mainly describes city scenes and citizen life, is very unique and important. New Citizen Fiction is the literature of transitional period, it is a relatively diverse, very active times, in which various ideas and values appeared without dominant one; its task is to show this complex and chaotic state, which look like a specimen recorded public ideas, emotion and life state of the transitional period; New Citizen Fiction is a link that bridges the past literature and the future one, which is affected by the New Realistic Novels, with some thought characteristics of the late80’s early90’s, and some factor of literature in the late90’s. It does not focus on not only the rural life like the end of the beginning of80’s and90’s literature, but also the city life like city novels in the end of the century, precisely because of the ambiguity of New Citizen Fiction, which the transitional literature has only, the research field often gets short shrift, the research papers about it can be counted on one’s fingers. But if you ignore the study of New Citizen Fiction, it is difficult to identify the overall perspective of the90’s literature and see the skeleton of the development and change of City Literature in90’s. This paper mainly discusses the conditions and the significance of New Citizen Fiction appeared in the90’s, the analysis to aesthetic characteristics of the text, and puts New Citizen Fiction in the city literature history since the twentieth Century to make comparison, finds why it is called New Citizen Fiction, compares and explains its relationship with the city novels during the same period and its literary influence to next city literature, analyses characters types and aesthetic characteristics of this kind of novels, explores its essence and understands its advantages and disadvantages, and then assesses its historical position and its value in literature history.The paper is divided into seven parts.The first part is introduction. First of all, we will clarify the core and extension of the research object, differentiate some related concepts, such as citizen, new citizen, citizen novels and so on, explore the western theory on the definition of civil society, analysis the theory background of citizen heat; secondly, we will discuss the significance of New Citizen Fiction research, combing the occurrence and development of the twentieth Century city literature. New Citizen Fiction is produced after the rise of the new towns people since90’s market economy, which have great significance to twentieth Century literature, meanwhile New Citizen Fiction is a transitional period of the past, so it is very valuable that the complexity and uncertainty which New Citizen Fiction shows. If you want to make the90’s City Novels clear, firstly make clear New Citizen Fiction. Again, we will summarize the research situation for New Citizen Fiction in recent years, in the study of the city novels, which takes New Citizen Fiction only as a footnote, merely mentioned a little, the paper is very few, which devotes to New Citizen Fiction as the research object, therefore there are many research space on New Citizen Fiction.Chapter1mainly discusses the condition where New Citizen Fiction created. With the development of market economy, a consumption era has come. So vividly, vigorous daily life has surfaced, which makes the ideological preparation for New Citizen Fiction.Chapter2discusses the new character types of New Citizen Fiction. First of all, New Citizen Fiction made a series of city intruders (mainly the young people who had nothing and just made their way into the city). They are full of longing for the city, want to conquer the city, but in front of the city powerful force of plunder and extrusion, their dreams quickly come to foam, so they formed a hostile relationship with city, and turned to attack the city of human’s dissimilation. All sorts of negative, in fact, is expressing a kind of affirmative praise. Secondly, the urban beauty image in New Citizen Fiction is very prominent. These urban beauty, although are reluctant to leave various substances of ocean, but they are no longer one-dimensional sexy beauty and synonymous with corruption, also no longer a vulgar material girl, they have their own independent personality self-esteem and spiritual world. In front of love, regardless of whether the trial or give up, they always have their own judgments; in front of male, they are no longer dependent, no longer let them imagine and control. Once again. New Citizen Fiction creates a group of marginalized literati, which is different from lonely clowns at marginal status which new sensation writers are willing to accept. They have no ideal and no beliefs in knowledge, but are anxious and fearful because they can not keep up the pace of commercial times. When they see a lot of persons picking sudden wealth in market economy, but themselves still penniless, they then uglify themselves and are full of remorse, someone of them simply abandon the identity of the literati, turn to the business. They envy money, and would not agree with behind norms of behavior in the commodity economy era, so these literati in the sea equally difficult to go on or retreat, anxious anxiety. In brief, they are still marginal man in city.The third chapter mainly discusses narrative mode of New Citizen Fiction. First of all, New Citizen Fiction mostly adopts the narrative style of popularization, its themes are about love triangle affairs with more dramatic conflict, the story is often steep, beyond our expectations, furthermore, New Citizen Fiction novels contain sex, murder, science fiction, suspense, mystery and other popular fiction elements, which make the story of ups and downs, fascinating. Secondly, New Citizen Fiction has characteristic patternization in the creation, there are a large number of similar phenomenon in creating city intruders and the alienation material. In addition, there is such a character mode--the slogan of life, appearing in New Citizen Fiction. Writers’ description does not focus on people’s feelings and experiences, does not pay attention to depict the story and spread the plot. On the one hand, it likes to portray ordinary person’s rich overnight history, which meet the lower class’ wealthy dream; on the other hand, it reveals the reality of the sudden rich class--their wealth is the illegal income which is obtained by scheme and speculation, these one will eventually lose everything--New Citizen Fiction tries to pass this kind of retribution for good and evil story mode, criticizing those behavior to acquire wealth by means of selling one’s soul and transgressing moral.The forth chapter mainly focuses on the aesthetic characteristics of New Citizen Fiction. Firstly it is worthy of attention that New Citizen Fiction finds the city landscape. In the view of new citizen novelists, the city landscape becomes an object, they observe city streets, buildings, bars, shopping malls, in a rogue view, and even the body also is a kind of ornamental objects. Next, it shows the new citizen novelists’ urban belief confusion and the need of urban poetic. So the New Citizen Fiction shows the fascination to depth and the aesthetic characteristics of Non-depth:on the one hand, they show extreme fascination to the noble, eternal, depth, classic, on the other hand, they like to pretend, write the pain which is alienated by city and nowhere to escape. But it is just shows the creation of the superficial and artificial, so the classic becomes depth label, pain becomes disguise.The fifth chapter takes New Citizen Fiction into the other city literature, in order to discuss the historical position of New Citizen Fiction. New Citizen Fiction carries on Shanghai literature in the last century thirty, forty’s tradition, and open the city literature in the late ninety’s, which is an extremely important part in the development process of twentieth century city literature. Firstly, this chapter does a comparison between New Citizen Fiction and Shanghai literature, by which we can see that the tight connection between two generation of city literature with60years’distance. In contrast to Shanghai Literature, New Citizen Fiction’s appearance is more clear and comprehensive. Once again, it discusses the relationship between New Citizen Fiction and the other city novel in same ninety’s and its influence on the succedent city novel. New Citizen Fiction is born in the middle of ninety’s when market economy just starts, which is a transitional period. On the one hand, New Citizen Fiction shows the crush on substance and the pursuit of desire; on the other hand, it wants to show the call for true love and social justice, which is flounder in vain before completely giving up ideal and belief.In miscellaneous, we will mainly discuss the historical value of New Citizen Fiction. New Citizen Fiction not only is burdened with the previous rural literature and the grand narrative style, but also opens and deeply affects the city novel, secretly connects these two stages. However, just because it is a transitional stage, New Citizen Fiction has many shortages. Firstly, New Citizen Fiction column presents an appearance of uneven level, some novels need improve, some one are not worth reading. Furthermore, New Citizen Fiction column shows the phenomenon of adulteration, such as Liu Xinglong’s Share of Hardship, was about the village life, but was included in new citizen fiction column. Secondly, New Citizen Fiction showing vulgar characteristic, becomes cultural fast-food like shooting star. Thirdly, the public discourse is also very suspicious, which is manipulated by New Citizen Fiction. Charges to the city alienation may be just a narrative strategy imitating the western theory, their inner voice is still infatuated with matter, even wants to get more money in transitional period, by which we can see the awkward of New Citizen Fiction.
