In the era of globalization, the exchanges between countries are increasingly frequent.Every country pays more and more attention to the understanding of itself amongpeople at home and aboard, and national image has played a more prominent role inthe development of one country. National image can not only expand their culturalinfluence and attraction, but also to inject new impetus for the upgrading of hardpower. National image is an important component of the country’s comprehensivenational strength and the key strategic objectives that all countries diligently persue.The greatest challenge facing China in national image-construction is that there is anenormous difference between China’s self-awareness and knowledge of China inforeign countries and the various distorted arguments are quite rife and rampant, thus,there are still much areas for improvement of China’s national image. Because theUnited States dominants the pattern of international public opinion and it is the leaderin the communication of China’s negative image, to make a research on China’simage distorted by the United States and China’s tactics in contemporary times withgreat theoretical and practical significance. From the theoretical perspective, theresearch can enrich the theoretical system of Ideological and Political Education; fromthe practical perspective, it is conducive to maintain the overall situation of internaldevelopment and stability and to build peace and friendly international environment.Considering the research on national image is still a new subject and has not beenspecialized in China’s image distorted by the United States and China’s tactics incontemporary times, the dissertation makes an effort to systematically analyzeChina’s image distorted by the United States and China’s tactics on the basis ofprevious studies, and strives to innovate in the following areas. Firstly, to be based onthe existing achievements, the dissertation summarizes the concepts of national imagein common and combines with the concerned discourse of state leaders, so that theconnotation and denotation of national image can be defined from a new perspective.Meanwhile, combining with the relationship between national image and cultural softpower, the function of national image is also illustrated in the dissertation. Secondly,it systematically analyzes the reason that the United States distorts China’s image from the elementary to the profound. Thirdly, it systematically discusses that thedistortion of China’s national image by the United States do more harm to China’sdevelopment through exploring the internal structure and formation mechanism ofcultural soft power and hard power.The dissertation is divided in two parts. The first part is about introduction, and thesecond part is the main body which includes five chapters. The main content of theintroduction and every chapters as follows.The part of Introduction mainly discusses the basis and significance of the topicchoosing, and the domestic and foreign literature review. It also elaborates theresearch methodology, the structure of the dissertation, the innovation points anddifficulties. The part of Introduction lays the foundation for the text of the study.The first chapter sorts out the basic theory of national image which consists of theconcept, the characteristics and the function of national image. To be based on thecomprehensive consideration on the influencing factors of national image, thedissertation attempts to redefine the connotation of national image, that is nationalimage is refers to the objective and subjective feeling and evaluation among domesticpeople and international community for the comprehensive strength of one country.The denotation of national image can include both domestic image and internationalimage, but also can include the true image and false image, and can also include theoverall image and sectional image. And the sectional image provides a theoreticalframework for the analysis of the second chapter, namely that the sectional image canbe divided into the economic image, political image, cultural image, social image andecological image. National image takes on the following characteristics: objectivityand subjectivity, stability and plasticity. The function of national image can besummarized by developing the bond between domestic members and attractingforeign people, and that is to say it can internally enhance national cohesion andcentripetal force and externally strengthen the affinity and influence of one country.The second chapter summarizes the main issues and tricks that the Unites Statesdistorts China’s national image. The main distorted issues can be included the economic, political, cultural, social and ecological aspects, and the main distortedtricks is to cover up the truth, to exaggerate development problems, and to hypevarious fallacies.The third chapter makes an analysis of the objective and subjective reasons that theUnited States distorts China’s national image. The objective reasons are that there aredifferences between ideology, social system and development model of China and theUnited States. The subjective reasons are that the United States is seeking to its ownnarrow national interests, maintaining its hegemony and power politics, and impedingthe great renewal of the Chinese nation.The fourth chapter illustrates that the distortion of China’s national image by theUnited States do more harm to China’s development. The harm of cultural soft poweris mainly manifested in the cultural vitality, creativity and communication ways. Thebreakthrough point of this part is the internal structure of cultural vitality, creativityand communication ways, and then finds that the mechanism of action that thedistortion of China’s national image by the United States do more harm to the culturalsoft power. The harm of hard power is mainly represented in economic, technologicaland military power. The breakthrough point of this part is the relationship betweensoft power and hard power, and then discovers the specific factors which nationalimage has impact on hard power.The fifth chapter elaborates the principles, guidelines and measures which deal withthe distorted China’s national image by the United States. The principles of copingwith is to uphold the fundamental interests of the overwhelming majority of thepeople and the fundamental interests of the people of all countries. The first guidelineof coping with is to vigorously communicate the Scientific Outlook on Developmentinternally and to promote the harmonious society building; the second one is tovigorously communicate the path of peaceful development externally and to promoteharmonious world construction. The discussion of this part analyses the principleswhich the communication should adhere to, the communication contents and methodsstarting from the characteristics and laws of internal propaganda and externalcommunication. The measures of coping with is including three aspects: the first one is to rationally and temperately carry out the struggle for the international publicopinion centering on the long-term issues and the major emergencies; the second oneis to fairly and objectively face our problems in the process of development; the thirdone is continuing to rapid development so that the goal of cooperation and win-wincan be completed, and it is can enhance the identity of domestic people and theinternational community for China.
