Chang Hsiang-wen is an important pioneer of modern Chinese geography.He initiated the establishment of the "Geographical Institute of China’" that is the earliest geography academic community in China. He was also founded the magazine of "geography" that is the first academic journal of geography in China.At the same time,the ear of his life was full of collision and amalgamation between sino-foreign in China.Therefore, his fate was affected by the changing times. His life had been involved in many major events. He was also involved in the political, industrial, educational, academic, Buddhism and so on.Based on the analysis of Chang Hsiang-wen’s thought and activities,we can better understand the times he lived in,and explore the basic evolution of modern Chinese society and an intellectual’s complex life in this social transformation period.This dissertation is divided into four chapters:The first chapter is on "Chang Hsiang-wen’s early career phase". This chapter describes his birth, education, examinations, teaching, etc. And discusses his early acceptance and dissemination of new knowledge, showes his growing environment that is is a blend of old and new.The second chapter is on "Chang Hsiang-wen’s political activities". This chapter describes his involvement in student protests, Revolution of1911, Revolution of1913,Hongxian Imperialism and party politics. As the revolution of the coerced, Chang Hsiang-wen involved in political activities.However, He also has an independent political stance and choice.This chapter reveals the subtle relationship between political and him.The third chapter is on "Chang Hsiang-wen’ industrial activities and the ’Geographical Institute of China’". Through the introduction of the situation, this chapter reveals the fate of industrial participants, and the the important role played by Chang Hsiang-wen. At the same time, the chapter also sorts out the academic achievements of Chang Hsiang-wen.The fourth chapter is on "Chang Hsiang-wen’s beliefs of Buddhism and ideas in later years" Through the collation of historical data, the chapter reveals the formation and cause of Chang Hsiang-wen’s belief in Buddhism. In addition/this chapter also systematically sorts out his ideas in later years, and explores the reasons for the formation of this ideology and the enormous impact of his own.Finally, to conclude from the perspective of the times of Chang Hsiang-wen’s life, and describes his ultimate fate.
