After two centuries of silence, the literary creation of paeseul writing became prosperous again in Choseon Dynasty. And there are two kinds of reasons why paeseul writing became flourished at that time.The national prosperity under the rule of King Seongjong, the literati psychological stability, Confucianism becoming new ruling ideology, and Hongmungwan set up by King Seongjong providing supports for the creation of paeseul writing, are social background and external reasons. The pursuit of literati to knowledge, the need to break the idle status from isolated and leisurely life, and using paeseul writing as a way to satirize the present life and enlighten people make literati pay attention to paeseul writing again. With the internal and external causes, a lot of great paeseul writing works and paeseul writers emerged in Choseon Dynasty.The content of paeseul writing works reflects the thoughts of these literati. As a part of the ruling class, first they must obey the traditional Confucianism, so Confucian moral thinking like loyalty, filial piety and unyielding, believing in fate and cultural and educational governing philosophy are all reflected in their paeseul writings. One of the purposes of paeseul works is to satirize and enlighten people, so historical consciousness and critical spirit to the reality is also shown in it. Literati in Choseon Dynasty showed strong nationalist ideology in their historical consciousness. At the same time, they followed the Confucian attitude of ’acknowledge and learn from both ancient and contemporary society’ while dealing with the relationship between history and reality. Paeseul writers’criticism to the reality mainly focused on three topics:’critique to bureaucracy’,’sarcasm to dissoluteyangban’ and’exposure of the hypocritical buddhist’. By exposing the social corruption of the time, they tried toarouse the alert of everyone.Paeseul writers used their thoughts as the soul, pens as their tool. By writing articles their showed a picture of Choseon Dynasty’s society to the readers, a picture of good and evil of yangban, secularization of monks, growth of the jung-in class and development of women’s social status, from which paeseul writers’connotations originated. And by writing these connotations down on papers, they brought the picture of social living status alive to the readers.
