Lamp is widely used in everyday life and production. It’s still a doubt when the lamp originated from. Archaeological discoveries showed that it may trace to its source from Neolithic age. The lamp, as a purely social product, is result of collective wisdom and skill. In one word, lamp is both a form of material culture and a mirror of spiritual civilization.This doctoral dissertation concentrated on the study of lamp in Han Dynasty (206B.C-220A.D) in China. Chapter one sorted out the past achievements about ancient lamp research in and outside China. And then, introduces main content, study ways and means, methods in the dissertation.Chapter two and chapter three form a time and space frame of lamp in Han Dynasty. In these chapters, archaeological typology method is adopted to compare and classify substantial unearthed artifacts. You can also see a plenty of figures, which were copied from lots of archaeological reports. With the form of time and space frame, we can know the ensemble material culture of Han Dynasty. With the form of time and space frame, we can understand the position of the lamp of Han Dynasty in the long history of China’s lamp. With the form of time and space frame, we can be aware of the changing process and source and course of the lamp, thus we can make division and find pseudo for the newly unearthed lamps or the lamps handed down from ancient times.In chapter four, we used statistical charts to analyze the quantity, height, material quality, measurement of the lamp panel and lamp structure. On this basis, we discussed the regular pattern of the number of lamp in Han Dynasty and their use places. And of course, we mentioned the possible agent for this phenomenon. Another point in this chapter is the user, the usage mode and the circulation pattern of lamp, the role the lamp played in everyday life in Han Dynasty. To achieve this purpose, we adopted archaeological combination, inscriptions on bronze lamp, historical documents and stone relief. As a conclusion, we announced that the lamp in Han Dynasty was already socialized and commercialized, and meanwhile, it was used in people’s belief and had its own symbolic meaning. As a result, we begin to know the importance of the lamp and people’s life style in Han Dynasty.Chapter five is a study of four values of the lamp in Han Dynasty. To make this achievement, we firstly analyzed the modeling design, the technology and the social management system of the lamp with archaeological and philological materials. Then we concluded the artistic, technological and social and cultural value of the lamp. The forth value-the scientific value is specific for the lamp. That’s why we chose the lamp as the subject investigated.Less and less ancient artifacts can be preserved up to now. Also does the information contained in these artifacts. Unfortunately, this limited ancient cultural heritage is going with the passage of time. This dissertation sorts out and selects from our cultural heritage, takes notes, studies the lamp in Han Dynasty, with the great purpose to protect, preserve and restore the social life style of Han Dynasty.
