Since the 1990’s, there has been a continuous emergence of novels with "officialdom" as the central theme. The story these novels describe happen in the officialdom, utilizing power as a narrative link and the official human as the described object. Widely welcomed by readers, they became a continuous creative trend in contemporary literature, and a beautiful portrait of the literature landscape. The result of various diverse writers and their works with outstanding personalities, distinctive characteristics, are of a unique significance and research value.This thesis is based on extensive assimilation of the existing research results. Firstly defining the conception of officialdom novel, and then from a theoretical level, explores nearly two decades of official novels in a more systematic in-depth theoretical and empirical research.The thesis is divided into the following sections:Introduction:Explaining the concept of officialdom novel, officialdom novel history, research status, and research implications and value.Chapter One:Depicts the rise and development of officialdom novels over nearly two decades. The reasons for the rise of officialdom novel in the last two decades not only includes both power chaos and social transformation, but also traditional perceptions of official standards as honest and upright official; bias created by social hierarchy and power structure. The creative process evolved through different stages, from Reform Literature to Official Novels; Main Melody to Diversification, and also Officialdom Novel Generalization.Chapter two:Discusses the type and patterns of officialdom novels during the last two decades. Officialdom novel is a kind of typologized and patterned novel. According to its plot and theme, it can be divided into three main types:anti-corruption officialdom novels, the ups and downs officials in officialdom novels, and anatomical humanity officialdom novels.Chapter three:Discusses nearly two decades of officialdom novel power game playing. First explored is the power structure and network of relationships existing in the two decades officialdom novel. Then discussed is the conflict between power and law; and lastly are the Machiavellian, trickery and living wisdom in officialdom novel.Chapter four:Explored in this chapter are nearly two decades officialdom novel emotional and rational conflicts. First discussed are the contradictions and conflicts between personal feelings and political rationality. And secondly the existing conflict between instinctive desires and morality.Chapter five:The character image of officialdom novels over the last two decades is discussed in this chapter. The following are the main characters:varied personalities of the lead cadres; the lowly people in the power struggle; the Intellectual images entering and exiting the officialdom; the punctuated image of women decorating the officialdom.Chapter six:The final chapter analyses the writing problems encountered in officialdom novels over the last two decades. First discusses problems in the process of officialdom literary theme (fictional). Second are the problems in the writer’s description of officers and officialdom. Lastly discussed are the moral and ideological problems in officialdom novel.Conclusion:Social and cultural effects caused by officialdom novel, and the creative direction of officialdom novel.
