It it very important to measure beam transverse profile intuitively and effectively. It is a traditional and widely used means which is based on optical techniques to measure beam transverse size for linac. Further more, means based on optical technique is not alternative to measure beam transverse size for electron storage ring.In this paper, we survey beam transverse profile measurement methods and emittance measurement method for linac at first. And then, we introduce the limit and its improvement of the traditional imaging method. An overview of the application of the X-ray imaging techniques at some accelerator is given.The theory of beam transverse profile measurement, such as the concept of emittance, beam distribution, beam size, and the properties of synchrotron radiation are introduced. And then, we introduce the theory of interference method to measure the beam size and the device of beam emittance measurement of the HLS injector.The author’study in this paper is on the basis of the work of forerunner. The beam spot measurement system of HLS II injector, the SR monitor, the SR imaging method system and the SR interference method system are designed and installed at HLS II. We carry out a series of studies around these systems. These include:1) Calibration of the optical system of the beam spot measurement system and the SR monitor are complished off-line. Calibration of the magnification factor of the SR imaging method system and the linearity of the CCD are finished.2) Simulation of the SR imaging method system and the SR interference method system using SRW code are complished with the new Lattice. We have tested the optical elements. The systematical error and random error of the SR imaging method system are discussed and considerd at measurement results.3) The client program of the beam spot measurement system, the SR monitor and the linac emittance measurement program are developed with Windows 7, LabVIEW 2011 and CA Lab. The client program and server program of the SR imaging system system and the SR interference system are developed with areaDetector, Levmar, MEDM and CSS boy.4) Beam transverse beam size of injector and storage ring are measured by these systems. We have measured the emittance, the beam energy spread and the coupling coefficient using the SR imaging method system and the SR interference system.These systems have operated at HLS II, and play an important pole at machine commission, acceptance check of the project and machine research. The SR imaging system can be used to monitor the machine state and measure the horizontal beam size precisely. It can be measure the vertical beam size when the coupling coefficient is large.
