| The nautical chart symbolical language is a graphic symbol system, which is formed ofnatural objects and social object in ocean and surrounding land after being conceptualized, andall of which are results of the human’s cognition and image thinking. In linguistics, the nauticalchart symbolical language is a complex combination which has some levels and linguisticelements. By the various relations of linguistic elements and their internal structure of languagerelationship described, some grammatical rules, representation and generation rules which arerevealed. In order to research some grammatical rules of the nautical chart symbolical languageand its essential features, to achieve the transformation on service mode, to enrich and perfecttheories, to establish new universal technical standards, to provide theoretical guidance for newtechnologies and methods, to enlarge the chart information transmission and exchange of therange, to improve cognitive chart ability, to protect navigation safety, to support the oceandevelopment, production activities and spatial information services, both theories and practicesabout the construction and realization techniques for the grammatical rules of the nautical chartsymbolical language are discussed in this paper.On the theoretical hand, the main factors are analyzed for design and application of thenautical chart language, which are guided by theories of modern linguistics, theories of graphiclanguage and theories of cartographical language. The basic methods of the nautical chartsymbolical language grammatical rules under the form-linguistics frame, and builds someuniversal grammatical principles and transformational-generative grammatical rules are putforward. After the key structure model of level of the nautical chart symbolical language isapplied, the various language expression levels of the deep-structure and surface-structure areexplored. The metaphorical relationship in the nautical chart symbolical language grammar, andbetween the nautical chart symbolical language grammar and natural language grammar, as wellas semantic consistency and grammatical structure of universal significance, which are achievedfrom three levels of the nautical chart symbolical language expression such as the morpheme,vocabulary and sentence etc,. The mathematical and logical formulas, tree diagram are appliedby some grammatical rules. The structure model of levels of morpheme, vocabulary and sentenceand semantic formation rules are explained. According to basic computer processes offormalizing, modeling and processing, some grammatical descriptive rules of the nautical chartsymbolical language are put forward. The descriptive language instructions are explained, whichcan be identified and interpreted by computers, and then the vocabularies and sentences aretransformed to instruction texts for computer processing. For some IHO ECDIS standards used,the morphemes are transformed to vocabularies, and the vocabularies are made into sentences in samples, which are generated by presented instructions and related rules about vocabularies andsentences of the nautical chart language.On the technical hand, the transformational-generative grammatical rules are applied fortransforming the grammar rules to the descriptive grammar rules, then to grammaticaldescriptive instructions and theirs related conversion rules in idea of grammatical independence.Beginning with the lowest level of morpheme, the morpheme classification is optimized. Thegraphic, color and lexical morphemes are brought forward for providing reference andparameters for constructing and applying the nautical chart symbolical language system.Founded transformation of various language expression level of the deep structure to the surfacestructure on application of grammatical descriptive instructions of the nautical chart symbolicallanguage and its related rules, the point, line and fill the lexical database and the9sentencepatterns are discussed. The table of color distribution, the table of symbols index, file structure oflexical database and their storage format of text are defined. The interactive chart vocabularyeditor is designed with developer tools of Visual of C++software. Based on the grammaticaldescriptive instructions of the nautical chart symbolical language and its related rules are appliedand interpreted, the universal nautical chart symbolical language is used in three languageexpression levels from morpheme, vocabulary and sentence. Aimed at applying the Chinese"ENC Data Conversion System" and the German "SeeMyENC2.0System", some grammaticaldescriptive rules and grammatical descriptive instruction rules which are correct and universal,the technical methods are feasible, and all of them are validated.In addition, the theoretical results are able to provide useful help for studying the3D andsound nautical chart symbols. In the technical aspect, the nautical chart symbolical language canbe used for expanding to construct some thematic chart symbolical language, to display data ofother types of the electronic nautical chart, or to construct the symbolical language of otherdifferent types of maps. |
