Based on the coal exploration data analysis and sampling and test of key coal seams, the high sulfur coal formation environment and accumulation patterns have been studied and the high sulfur coal resources characteristics have been obtained. A resources classification scheme has been established, and the main resources type of Guizhou high sulfur coal have been evaluated. In order to find out the desulfurization and transformation characteristics of high sulfur coal, several experiments have been conducted, such as bioflotation experiments, flotation experiments, bioleaching desulfurization experiments and steam gasification. Furthermore, a mode of geological controls on the desulfurization and transformation characteristics have been established by analyzing the control mechanisms among high sulfur coal geological genisis, coal resources characteristics and type, coal desulfurization and transformation characteristics. Innovative understanding is under follow.(1) Based on the current classification scheme, a new high sulfur coal resources classification scheme has been established, the classification indicators including coal petrographic and coal chemical characteristics such as different sulfur forms, pyrite occurrence and coal metamorphic degree. 8 types of high sulfur coal resources have been defined according to the new scheme.(2) Desulfurization experimental study of different types of high sulfur coal in Guizhou has been conducted by using bioflotation method, flotation method and bioleaching method. The result shows that organic sulfur content and pyrite occurrence of high sulfur coal resources have a great influence on desulfurization of sulfur in coal. The fourth type of high sulfur coal is the easiest to be desulfurized, with pyritic sulfur is predominantly in coal and massive pyrite distributed as the main form. On the contrary, the seventh type of high sulfur coal with organic sulfur content above 1% and fine grain of pyrite disseminated in vitrinite is hard to clean.(3) Based on the desulfurization and gasification experimental study, the control mechanisms of geological genisis of high sulfur coal on the desulfurization and transformation characteristics have been obtained, and a mode of geological controls on the desulfurization and transfromation characteristics has been established.During the formation of high sulfur coal, it has been controlled by many factors, such as sedimentary environment, microenvironment of peat mire, magma hydrothermal activities and coal metamorphism. 8 types of high sulfur coal have been formed under the control of these geolo gical factors. Meanwhile, coal resources characteristics of different coal types, including coal rock characteristics, coal quality and chemical characteristics have a great influence on the desulfurization and transformation characteristics of coal. Thus, a mode of geological controls on the desulfurization and transfromation characteristics has been established.
