Correlation optical imaging or correlation imaging, was derived from investiga-tions on the non-local effect of two-photon entangled source. In correlation imaging, the image of the object can be obtained based on correlation algorithm by scanning theidle reference beam, with detecting the signal beam by a point detector synchronously, that’s why it was named ghost imaging as well. Correlation imaging breaks the con-cept of traditional linear optical imaging. From the standpoint of information theory, correlation imaging modulates and demodulates the image information of the objectivein physics, thereby having a series of advantages as well as features, such as stronganti-noise capacity, image optical encryption, weak source imaging, imaging belowthe Nyquist sampling limit and so on. Along with the development of correlationimaging, its giant application foreground is attracting worldwide research institutionsand governments to input a great amount of human and material resources.Traditional correlation optical imaging is difficult to meet the increasing marketrequirements. Therefore, the paper focuses on researching the new mechanisms andtechniques of correlation optical imaging, improving and optimizing the system, to en-rich corresponding theoretical research and promote its practical application progress.By combining theory and experiment, we systematically studied correlation op-tical imaging. Obtained innovative results include the following aspects:1. We proposed the periodic diffraction correlation imaging mechanism, and fin-ished corresponding theoretical analysis and experimental verification. Com-pared with traditional mechanisms, this method has a simple structure and lowcost, as well as multiple reference beams, which makes it able to generate mul-tiple images at the same time. By further investigation, we found that this method can realize several useful functions, such as image encryption and imag-ing through a scattering medium.2. We proposed several three dimensional correlation optical imaging mechanismsand core technologies, including the methods based on3D feature of thermallight, the binocular parallax principle, the flight time of laser pulse and temporal-spatial correlation of the field. These systems can meet different applicationdemands.3. In the ideal thermal light correlation optical imaging model, we analyzed therelation between correlation optical imaging performance and imaging order. And we proved that it’s not accurate to evaluate the imaging quality by visibility, the quality will not be improved by simply increasing imaging order, and the bestquality is achieved by the lowest-order intensity fluctuation correlation imaging.4. We first analyzed the correlation optical imaging with an object of uniform mo-tion in a straight line, and proposed the method to realize moving object corre-lation imaging by using the concept of still-frame.5. we proposed a uniformly weighted correlation imaging arithmetic, which is ableto reduce the distortion caused by nonuniform field in correlation optical imag-ing.6. We proposed the concept of gray scale in correlation imaging, which is usedto evaluate corresponding imaging quality of a complicated object. Simulationresults concluded that the larger the calculated gray scale is, the more details theobtained image have.
