A Study on the Economy Mode of Forced Labor of GULAGThe purpose of the study on the economy mode of forced labor of GULAG is to discover the historical process of the emergence, development and decline of the mode, the characteristics and functions of the mode. It can lay the foundation for us to study the reasons of its emergence in the way of the economic development of the Soviet Union and its influence on the development of the economics and society of the Soviet Union and Russia. Finally it can fulfill the task of understanding the development of the whole history and culture of the Soviet Union through the information conveyed by this economic phenomenon.The main argument of this paper is that the economy mode of forced labor of GULAG once existed in the history of the economy development of the Soviet Union. It appeared in the end of 1920s, became popular in 1930s and 1940s and declined by the end of 1940s and the beginning of 1950s. It played an important role in the industrialization process of the Soviet Union. The argument is not proposed by pure inference, judgment or imagination but resulted by long-term study and analysis of a large amount of the literature and files released by the central departments of GULAG and the basic knowledge about the structure, activity and files disposing system of the punishing departments of the Soviet Union. It gives full play to the subject of history, refers to the existing achievements and is directed by the historical materialism. It is achieved though the methodology of history compiling and carried out from the perspective of external modernization and political economics.The study on GULAG of the Soviet Union has been carried out for a long time by foreign scholars of history and the achievement is great. However, these scholars, no matter of Russia or of other countries, are suspected to be subjective in their study because of their ideological limitations. The study of this paper breaks through the major perspectives of the foreign scholars who mainly focus on class struggles including human right, political persecution, horror and suppression. It is directed by the historical materialism of Marxism and tries to study the emergence, development and decline of the economy mode of forced labor of GULAG from the perspective of external modernization and political economics and finally draws a new conclusion.Till now, there is still no specialized and systematic study on this subject in China. The completion of this paper can fill the gaps for the study of the Soviet Union. It is necessary for a better understanding of the series of reforms carried out in the Soviet Union from 1920s to 1950s, which is helpful for the deeper study of the history and culture of the primary stage of the Soviet Union socialism construction. Understanding the developmental history of all kinds of regional and departmental economy and culture of the Soviet Union is the basis of the study of the history and culture of Russia today.All in all, understanding of the development of different departments of the Soviet Union can deepen the understanding of the history and reality of Russian now from the aspects of the economical and social environment and the specialty of economy. It can lay a solid foundation for the cross cultural communication of China and Russia in the fields of economy and diplomacy, etc.
