Sub"Core Periphery"Pattern: Regional Perspective on European IntegrationThe theme of this dissertation is Sub"Core Periphery"Pattern in European integration. In the study of the relation between Core and Periphery in European integration, I find that European industrial development does not follow the law that manufacturing industries will concentrate in the core countries, instead concentrate and disperse in both core and peripheral countries. I also find the fact that peripheral countries developed faster than core countries did not follow the path of"Core- Sub core- Periphery". At the same time, traditional integration theory seldom touches the facts that Gini Coefficient became wider among some regions1 in the process of European integration. The dissertation tries to explain the above-mentioned phenomena using Sub-"Core Periphery"Pattern theory. The dissertation holds that the deepening development of European integration is the base reason for the arising of the above phenomena. Construction of the Single Market and abolishing of competition barriers conformed the industry integration, dispersion of industries from the core countries brought into play comparative advantages, and concentration of industries in peripheral countries marked the scale of economy. The concentration and dispersion together speeded up the economic growth of core and peripheral countries. Therefore, a growth pole and its neighboring areas constituted a growth core, the range of which is an area with a radiation radius of the growth pole. We call this"Sub Core- Periphery"pattern (Hereinafter referred as"sub core","sub pattern", etc.) as it is in the traditional"Core-Periphery"relationship. The formation of sub cores speeds up the growth of peripheral countries and hence leads to the formation of the path of convergence,"Core- Periphery- Core". The formation of sub cores also widens the development disparity among regions and led the Gini Coefficient to rise. This dissertation is completed based on the study of a lot of materials about the practice of European integration. First the dissertation discussed the background and the conditions of"Core- Periphery"theory. Then it put forward the conditions, development strategies, and deepening policies of sub core. After the above discussions, the dissertation discussed in detail the Sub-"Core Periphery"Pattern. The Single Market facilitated elimination of trade barriers, reduction of transaction costs, expansion of market and conformity of industries, which provided the basis for sustaining and development of Sub-"Core Periphery"Pattern. Regional development...
