This dissertation looks at the possibility of a high degree of synergy and economic integration between the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and the Hong Kong Special Administration (SAR), particularly with reference to the related industry. It also examines the future and specific field deeply. This enhanced cooperation is taking place when both the SEZ and the SAR are undergoing thorough economic structuring-as well as a paradigm shift-to meet the challenge of globalization and arrival of the knowledge economy. For Shenzhen, there is the question of "the special economic zone no longer being that special" now that most cities along the coast have similar open-door policies as the zone. It is true that within the past decade, Shenzhen has carves out a niche for itself as China's pioneering economic city. Yet after China's accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO), Shenzhen will face more competition from cities such as Shanghai and Beijing. Although Hong Kong has experienced its worst recession in recent memory, it takes some time for Hong Kong to come back to life completely. After analyzing the strengths and weakness of the two economies, this thesis argues that both the SEZ and the SAR stand to gain from economic integration -in particular combining forces in the related industry. The paper analyzes the advantages and the challenger of the two economies, and deals with the cooperation of the two economies making an influence on and benefiting from the Shenzhen and the Hong Kong based on economic situation of the two economies. In fact, it is not some hindrance for the cooperation of the two economies, for example, there is enormous difference in economic system and economic scale of the two economies; what's more, non-economic factors is the most important including law and the tradition of politics etc., particularly the way of thinking of the officials and entrepreneurs.Indeed, by early 2002, the benefits of SEZ-SAR economic integration have to a big extent been recognized by Beijing, Shenzhen and Hong Kong. The central authorities gave their approval to a "closer economic and trade relationship" between Hong Kongand the mainland. It is logical that more intimate economic ties should develop first between Hong Kong and Shenzhen. This dissertation focuses on specific field on the cooperation of the SEZ and SAR in the following chapters, which analyzes that not only production industry but also financial industry needs to integrate the resource of the two economies so as to make use of as soon as possible. According to specific field on the cooperation of the SEZ and SAR, the mode of two-city as well as Shenzhen-Hong Kong economic integration is the final developmental direction. In the last two chapters, this dissertation outlines applied strategy on the cooperation of the SEZ and the SAR and the prospect of cooperation.
