| It has been a key issue that how to cultivate and enhance a firm's competitiveness, while the market space becoming more and more strait due to fierce competition. However, in line with the growing strictness of environmental constraints owing to the scarcity of environmental resources, the development of industry is approaching to the boundary of this restriction, leading to remarkable changes of the source of firm's competitiveness. It is believed that a scheme that contains firm's sustainable competitiveness with regard to environmental constrains is vital to greater business success and creates a must for its sustainable development. Hence, this dissertation rebuilds the evaluation system of firm's sustainable competitiveness on the basis of redefining the concept of the firm's sustainable competitiveness. In addition, it evaluates the current situation of the firm's sustainable competitiveness in the industry by taking China's building material industry as a case study. An empirical analysis is given to the co-relation of environmental regulation and firm's sustainable competitiveness. It also discusses the approaches to improve the firm's sustainable competitiveness in China's building material industry, by adopting the industrial accession regulation. In this sense, this research is of important signification both theoretically and practically.The improvement of firm's sustainable competitiveness is the main issue in the dissertation. Besides the introduction and conclusion parts, the dissertation consists of six chapters. In chapter 2, with the environmental constrains being taking into account, by arguing the concept and content of firm's sustainable competitiveness, and establishing the evaluation system of firm's sustainable competitiveness accordingly, the author sets up a theoretical base of the research. Chapter 3 conducts an empirical study by using the system on evaluating the firm's sustainable competitiveness after collecting more than 5000 firms'data in China's building material industry. This chapter prepares a practical base for the further study. In chapter 4 and 5, the author unveils the inside relationship between environmental regulation and firm's sustainable competitiveness, finds out the integrated mechanism of how environmental regulation improving firm's sustainable competitiveness, which consists of three main mechanisms. In chapter 6 and 7, the optimal environmental regulation is designed by applied industrial accession policies in China's building material industry, some schemes and countermeasures are also given to apply the references for the government.Based on the theories and methods of competitiveness, sustainable development, environmental regulation, and industrial organization theory, the dissertation conducts the study by using systematic method, empirical study, case study, and comparative study, following the principles of combining qualitative and quantitative analysis, the theoretical and empirical studies.The conclusion and innovative work of the study are as follows:Firstly, the firm's sustainable competitiveness is the competence which integrates the economical, social and environmental effects. Secondly, according to the results of empirical study on the evaluation of the firm's sustainable competitiveness in building material industry in China, the inefficiency of environmental regulation is the main cause that leads to low competitiveness. Thirdly, since environmental regulation has positive correspondence to the firm's sustainable competitiveness, it affects the firm's sustainable competitiveness through three mechanisms:the entry-exist mechanism, the cost-benefit mechanism, and the technology transmission mechanism. Lastly, strict environmental regulation will lead to the improvement of the firm's sustainable competitiveness in environment-sensitive industry. In the case of China's building material industry, establishing and implementing the industrial accession policy is the principal task.
