An important research field in CSCW is how to provide a CWE (Collaborative Work Environment) for geographically dispersed groups to complete a common task.Collaborative work Environment Simulates the face-to-face collaboration, and builds a virtual "face-to-face" CWE through the provision of interactive and aware function. It breaks through the spatial constraints of group collaboration. Wherever the user is, (s)he can use this virtual CWE to achieve the "face-to-face" collaboration.Along with the improvement of positioning accuracy and reducing of the positioning cost, the applications of location-based collaboration becomes more widely, we need a new generation of CWE: location-aware supported collaborative work environment(short for LCWE), through which users can not only collaborate by "face-to-face", but also can aware the changes of user's location and spatio-temporal relationship between each other. To support the development of LCWE, and we must analyze the features of location-based collaboration fully, and then discuss which and how elements of the collaboration have been affected by the user's location. Therefore, the location awareness has become a hot area in CSCW research, the work is now concentrated in three areas: 1) How the user's location affects the task division, coordination and intent deduce etc; 2) How to get the location information, integrate the multi-source locations, and model the location information; 3) How to express and detect the spatio-temporal event. From the aspect of the location-based collaboration, we need do a deep research about the user location effects on collaboration elements, such as organization, rules and interactions; From the aspect of LCWE, there are still some limitations: 1) little studies on the expression and detection of spatio-temporal event; 2) lack of study about user location impact on the rules of collaboration, such as floor control and access control; 3) lack of a common framework model to develop LCWE.Therefore, firstly we analyze the characteristics of location-based collaboration, and then propose its collaborative model; Secondly we analyze the features, services and key technologies of LCWE. Thirdly, we resolve three key technologies: 1) The expression and detecting of spatio-temporal event; 2) Spatial fair Based fuzzy floor Control Strategy; 3) The extended role-based access control model; Finally, we propose the framework model of LCWE-TCEF, and develop a prototype- SynMapper to verify the correctness of framework model and key technologies. The main contributions can be summarized as follows:â—†From theory aspect1) Firstly we propose the concept of location-based collaboration, analyze its dispersion, mobility and dynamic characteristics, and then give the Loco model to describe the dynamic effect of user's location on communication, negotiation-control and organization.2) We propose location-aware supported collaborative work environment at first time, and then analyze its characteristics and five services: organization services, activity service, interaction service, scene service and location-aware service.â—†From key technology aspect1) We propose the spatio-temporal event model to express spatio-temporal event and two-step event detection mechanism: TSEDM;2) Based on the fuzzy floor control policy, we put forward the spatial fair based fuzzy floor control policy by adding spatial fair based floor sorting algorithm;3) By adding two constraints for mapping user to role: identity and spatio-temporal constraints, we propose an extended RABC model: Ex-RABC.â—†From the realization aspect1) Based on ITU-T. 120 reference model, we put forward a framework model of LCWE: TCEF.2) Based on TCEF reference model, we firstly develop the core module of LCWE: T.120 engine, and then present a prototype: SynMapper to verify the correctness of framework model and the key technologies. In this paper, the research work on the next generation of collaborative work environment has an important theoretical guidance and practical significance.
