Utilizing scare resource efficiently is very important in wireless network. Resource management in wireless network includes reasonable deployment of complicate wireless channel and hardware resource, providing QoS guarantee for different traffic requirements, and so on. Based on cross-layer design, this dissertation makes a study of clustering algorithm and medium access scheme in wireless sensor network, as well as connection admission control scheme in wireless metropolitan network. The contents of this work are listed as follows:Resource management in wireless sensor network(WSN) demands: application specific, distributed, energy saving. Clustering topology can satisfy these requirements. However, single-hop communication is the primary reason of unbalanced energy consumption and lacking of scalability. LEACH(Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy) is the most representative clustering algorithm in WSN. Making an improvement on LEACH, this dissertation proposes an Enhanced Multihop Clustering Algorithm(EMCA) which uses multihop communication for inter & intra cluster. The numerical results show that, EMCA can make an efficient use of energy to prolong the network lifetime. Compared with LEACH, EMCA is more scalable.Media access control(MAC) protocol has a great influence on the performance of WSN. Many characteristics of TDMA scheme make itself become the most suitable MAC scheme for clustering WSN. Based on EMCA, this dissertation keeps on researching of medium access in the cluster. Considering routing information, a cross-layer designed TDMA scheduling algorithm for multihop topology is proposed. Algorithm findsthe critical path in the cluster first. When allocating time slots, arrange as many nodes as possible to transmit at the same time. Compared with other TDMA scheduling schemes in clustering network, the new algorithm can reduce data delay remarkably and balance energy consumption in the cluster. An admission control algorithm utilizing cross-layer design is proposed for IEEE 802.16 networks. In the algorithm deterministic QoS is provided for real-time traffic, and statistical QoS for non-real-time traffic. When making the admission decision, the modulation and coding scheme used in physical layer is considered to have a knowledge of the bandwidth variation. Admission control is adaptive according to the traffic type and wireless channels. Numerical results show that the proposed cross-layer algorithm can provide efficient QoS guarantee and avoid congestion in the network.
