System management is a complex problem that is worth of great amount of research work. There are many research methods existed in this area, such as stactistic analysis, data mining, model recognizing, feedback control. These are research methods motivated from improvement of functionality. This paper does research on cluster system management from the architecture perspective. We see cluster system management as a special distributed system, and propose improvement of the architecture. The major research work of this paper are listed below:1. According to the survey of existed cluster system management software and the case study of Dawning series system management package, an abstract model of cluster system management software is established. We propose that CAR is the key problem of this model. C refers to consistency, operation consistency problem caused by the relationship between managed objects. A refers to atomicity,"all_or_reinitiated"condition must be satisfied when multiple managed resources are incorporated in one operation sequence. R refers to recoverability, a manager must recover from faulty or failed state quickly. Consistency, Atomicity and Recoverability can all be divided into strong and weak property. Strong property takes relationship of resources into consideration, while weak property does not. The manageability of a cluster system management software architecture can be judged by the degree of CAR.2. In order to solve the CAR problem, existed cluster system management architecture should be modified. We propose a standard runtime construct of manager in cluster system management architecture——Grip. Grip integrates several techniques that can meet one or two of CAR properties, they are: coordination resource, synchronization resource, Grip checkpoint and destructive transaction.a. Coordination resource is in charge of share and exchange data between Grips(managers). Synchronization resource provides basic mechanism of global mutual exclusion, which can be used to achieve atomicity.b. Destructive transaction provides approach to describe the relationship...
