Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is a nondestructive technology that detect underground by the Ultra Wide Band (UWB) electromagnetic wave. GPR is used in the building of national defence and national economy increasingly. A good many difficult problems for the design of the GPR hardware has been solved at 80's or 90's.The signal processing of GPR is not very mature comparatively, and so more and more research is devoted to the GPR signal processing. This paper is also absorbed in the research of the GPR signal processing.GPR were used to detect deep layer underground early. GPR is used to detect shallow layer until the UWB technology is developed and used to GPR, so the history of shallow layer detection is shorter compared with the history of middle depth layer detection and deep layer detection, and so the GPR signal processing of shallow layer detection is under developing. In the shallow layer detection, the detection of small target buried shallowly requires more complex signal processing method. The detection of target buried shallowly requires higher resolution further, so the research of the synthetic aperture GPR is more pop. This paper is devoted to the research of the detection of small target buried shallowly.According to the GPR system, GPR can be assorted as impulse GPR, Step Frequency GPR (SFGPR), and etc. According to the configuration of GPR, GPR can be assorted as Down-Looking GPR (DLGPR), Forward-Looking GPR (FLGPR), Air Borne GPR (ABGPR), and etc.DLGPR is the most applied in all GPR. SFGPR is the pop research in the international GPR field, and there is no SFGPR developed inland. FLGPR is the new type GPR and there isn't other units to research it inland. In this paper the author researches the signal processing method of the down-looking impulse GPR and the step frequency down looking GPR, and also does a effective work in the research of the key technology of FLGPR.The used data come mostly from the JRC and the experiment did by the author's group. All the signal method proposed in this paper is effective for all the data, but limited to the space, the author doesn't give all the result of all the data in every chapter.
