Many safety-critical systems encountered in military and civilian industries are actually phased mission systems and fault-tolerant systems, which are important parts of reliability engineering. We step by step find approaches for system reliability from simple to complex upon introducing fault tree analysis, phased mission systems and imperfect coverage, respectively.First, accounting for characteristics of high-assurance computer systems reliability with hardware and software, a module based separable solution of fault tree is presented to synthesize dynamic and static fault tree model. The modular solution helps lower the complexity of the model and simplify the processes of reliability analysis, whose importance and application values are illustrated in the following research.Second, Two different kinds of approaches for the reliability analysis of phased-mission systems are introduced, which include binary decision diagram for phased-mission systems (PMS-BDD) combinational methods and Markov chain methods. After characteristics of components across phases and that of hybrid methods are researched, and if survival function of the components across the phases is exponentially distributed and the several special terms are matched, then the simple algorithm is presented for the hybrid methods. This algorithm implements a synthesis of the approaches into a single methodology which advantages of the low computational complexity and easy implementation are shown using an example.Third, for static phased-mission systems (PMS) and imperfect coverage, IGPMS-CPR is presented upon GPMS-CPR algorithm and several new concepts. Based on IGPMS-CPR and Fussell-Vesely importance measure, a simple and efficient importance measure is presented to analyze component's importance of phased-mission systems considering imperfect coverage.Next, the hierarchical nature of hierarchical systems aids in fault coverage.
