Tongue diagnosis is an important part of the Four Diagnoses in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is a necessary component in clinical diagnosis. Those famous doctors, who lived in ancient society or live in modern society, are good at tongue diagnosis.TCM considers the body of man is an inseparable whole and the tongue is just like a mirror that reflects physiological function and pathological changes. Because the tongue has closely related to viscera and qi, blood, and body fluid, the excess and deficiency of the visceral, the exuberance and decline of qi and blood, the wax and wane of body fluid, the existence and exhaustion of stomach qi, the nature of disease, and the deep and low location of disease, all can be reflected on the tongue. The beauty of tongue diagnosis lies in its simplicity and immediacy: whenever there is a complex disorder full of contradictions, examination of the tongue instantly clarifies the main pathological process. Therefore, it is of great value in both clinic applications and self-diagnosis. Moreover, tongue diagnosis is one of the few diagnostic techniques that accord with the most promising direction in the 21st century: no pain and no injury.Traditional tongue diagnosis has inevitable limitations that impede its medical applications. First, the clinical competence of tongue diagnosis is determined by the experience and knowledge of the practitioners. Second, tongue diagnosis is usually based on the detailed visual discrimination. Therefore, it depends on the subjective analysis of the examiners, so that the diagnostic results may be unreliable and inconsistent. Therefore, it is necessary to build an objective and quantitative diagnostic standard for tongue diagnosis, and explore the relations between features and diseases. In this dissertation, the several key technologies of image analysis for the characterization of tongue diagnosis in Traditional Chinese Medicine are studied. In the first chapter, the background and the current situation are expounded firstly. Then the significance of this dissertation is elucidated. In the second chapter, the Gabor transform is derived for the limitation of the Fourier transform, and Gabor Jets is also detailedly discussed. The characteristics of Gabor filter are outlined. At last, we get that Gabor wavelet can be applied in the local feature extraction. In the third chapter, the segmentation of the body of tongue is a premise to establishing a system of automatic diagnosis by the feature of tongue in Traditional Chinese Medicine, whose qualities affect on the performance of tongue diagnosis. In order to overcome two key difficulties with the initialization and boundary concavities, a new active contour model is introduced as a segmentation method. We present an automatic initialization of snake by the feature of tongue in the HSV space. Multi-resolution wavelet (Gabor) decomposition is applied in active contour model generating the edge energy of the image. Experiments on real tongue image show the good performance of this method. In the fourth chapter, an effective method to confirm the amount of teeth-print and to attain the grade of teeth-print is brought forward. This method sufficiently applies the characters of GVF Snake and the features of the curvatures and gradients in the all points of teeth-print contour, so as to provide scientific bases for further study. In the fifth chapter, a novel method for Tongue Images Recognition (TIR) based on a combination of global features extracted by nonlinear kernel principal component analysis and local features derived by applying Gabor wavelets is discussed. It is well known that the distribution of tongue images is highly nonlinear under a large variation in viewpoints. Therefore, linear methods such as Principle Component Analysis (PCA) or Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) cannot provide reliable and robust solutions for TIR problems. In our framework, the improved LDA in the unitary space makes use of the null space of the within-class scatter matrix effectively, and Global feature vectors and lo...
