The development and application of x-ray laser is one of the significant forward projects in the laser science and technology fields today. X-ray lasers have widespread application foregrounds in many fields such as Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Materials Science and Initial Confinement Fusion (ICF), because of their special features and advantages. The studies on both x-ray laser itself and its applications were attended widely, since the first demonstration of x-ray laser at laboratories. At present, there is still much farther research, though many developments of x-ray laser and its applications have been achieved.The main work of the author in the three years of PhD was the experimental studies on x-ray laser and its applications. There are three aspects that the author has carried on an investigation in, referring to the tide of x-ray laser research in the world. The three aspects includes: studies and applications of diagnosing plasma with x-ray laser as a probe, demonstrations of x-ray laser towards water windows and attempt of table-top x-ray lasers. However, the emphases and progress were not the same.On the aspect of studies and applications of diagnosing plasma, there had been great achievements. An output beam of a Ni-like Ag x-ray laser at 13.9nm suited for applications was successfully obtained along with the optimization of various conditions. At the same time, the applications of diagnosing plasma with the x-ray laser a s a probe w ere e xecuted u sing b oth M oir6 d eflectometer a nd M ach-Zehnder interferometer. Experimental results showed some elementary value for the interrelated theories and codes.On the aspect of demonstrations of x-ray laser towards water windows, we chose Ni-like Ta x-ray laser at 4.48nm as the main object because of its great applying foreground and comparatively easy actualization. At present, a certain output intensity of the Ni-like Ta x-ray laser with a gain-length product (GL) of about 5.5 was achieved. With the development of further studies, the higher intensity output of the x-ray laser and even applications in biology fields would be outspreaded.On the aspect of attempt of table-top x-ray lasers, particular experimental projects of producing x-ray laser with a long- and an ultrashort-pulse laser united drive had been carried out under both the 10TW ps laser facility at National Laboratory of High Power Laser and Physics and the 20TW fs laser facility at BeijingInstitute of Physics. Now preparative works are almost finished, and the first experimental attempt of x-ray laser would start in the near future.In this article, the experimental contents and results that the author worked on the three aspects of x-ray laser during the time of PhD were delivered. The simple introductions were as below.In chapter I, the developing history of x-ray laser was simply introduced. The contents included the development of x-ray laser itself and its applications, the keystone of x-ray laser and its wide foregrounds.In chapter II, a series of necessary conditions and relative techniques on experimental studies of x-ray lasers was discussed in detail. The contents mainly included drive conditions, diagnosed methods, and optical elements and so on.In chapter III, the study progresses of Ni-like Ag x-ray laser and its applications of diagnosing plasma were described in detail. The main contents included the optimization of x-ray laser characteristics, the applied experimental demonstrations of diagnosing plasma with the x-ray laser as a probe using Moire deflectometer and Mach-Zehnder interferometer, respectively.In chapter IV, the experimental study progresses of Ni-like Ta x-ray laser near water window were shown in detail. The main contents included the experiments with united drive of base- and multiple-frequency laser, the optimization of drive conditions and the farther experimental schemes.In chapter V, the attempt of table-top x-ray lasers were introduced in detail.
