Tri-dimensional Imaging Altimeter is a new generation of microwave remote sensors in the world, which combines kernel techniques of classic altimeter, synthetic aperture imaging and interferometric imaging techniques together, and perform much more functions in new working modes.Because of strong mutual complement among altimeter, synthetic aperture imaging and interferometric imaging, Tri-dimensional Imaging Altimeter will play an important role in the microwave remote sensing of 21st century as new powerful advanced integrated microwave remote sensor. In 1980's, Jiang Jingshan , the member of CAE (Chinese Academy of Engineering ), and other Chinese scientists, advocated a plan to developing such Imaging Altimeter with far-sight and strong responsibility, and have been promoting such plan since then. In 1990's, this plan was accepted formally as a National '863' plan and was named China Imaging Altimeter (CIALT), which will manifest its great value in economic construction, military defense and other fields. As internationally advanced new microwave remote sensor, CIALT is very complex and adopts many new techniques. Among them, there are two kernel techniques: one is robust altimeter tracking algorithm, which can work not only in environments limited to traditional altimeters but also in much more other ones with different working modes; the other is the tri-dimensional imaging with high precision by combination of altimetry plus interferometry height measurement and synthetic aperture two-dimensional imaging.During the research on kernel techniques, the works has been accomplished are listed as below: ( 1 ) Investigation on the background and prospective of altimeter, syntheticaperture imaging and interferometric mapping. ( 2 ) A complete set of universal radar altimeter echo model suitable to differentnormal environments and its detailed application analysis. ( 3 ) LMM (Low-order Model and Moment) robust radar altimeter trackingalgorithm based on the analysis of the universal echo mode above and itsdetailed tracking performance evaluation by theoretical analysis andsimulation experiments. ( 4 ) two high-precision radar altimeter tracking algorithms' design and theirperformance analysis in theory. ( 5 ) Real-time radar altimeter adaptive tracking system based on LMM robusttracking algorithm and its tracking performance analysis by simulationexperiments. ( 6 ) Deviations-compensation scheme designed for synthetic aperture imagingand its performance evaluation by detailed simulation experiments. ( 7 ) Researches on interferometric kernel techniques, especially images coregistration andinterferometric phase estimation and unwrapping.
