To characterize and model the Internet traffic are the fundamental subjects in the research community. And the researches on Internet traffic are the preconditions of the design of Internet equipments and the experiments of the new protocols and new services. With the quick development of Internet, there are distinct debates on the characteristics of Internet traffic. Thus it results in the lack of reliable conclusions when traffic characteristics should be taken into account. Based on the requirements of real-world research tasks, this thesis covers the researches on the methods of judging the existence of fractal characteristic in real world traffic and the methods and criterions for evaluating traffic models with application. The main contributions of the thesis are as following:Firstly, based on the deep analysis of large numbers of traffic traces, this thesis affirms the existence of LRD characteristic of Internet traffic on large time scale (LS for abbreviation). We found out that the limitation of the judging methods based on observing the plot owns much to the dispute on the characteristics of Internet traffic on small time scale (SS for abbreviation). The difference of shaping experienced by the traffic components is the inherent reason of the traffic characteristics.Secondly, this thesis proposes a new parameterized method for the judging of multifractal (MF for abbreviation) characteristic of Internet traffic. And five series with deterministic-parameter are used to evaluate the validity of the new method. Based on the analysis of real world traces and the test of hypothesis, the suppose that MF of Internet traffic on FS will disappear is abandoned.Thirdly, starting from the classification of formerly proposed traffic models, this thesis analyzes the models in detail. The criterion and method for evaluating Internet traffic models are then proposed.Fourthly, stimulated by the finding of the shaping differences experienced by the traffic components, this thesis puts forward a new modeling method. The new traffic model is based on L-System and it can depict the MF characteristic of Internet traffic exactly. L-System is used to simulate the bursty mapping procedures among time scales. This new model solves the problems of lacking physical meaning and practicability encountered by the former proposed models. The analysis and comparison on the results of ourα-β-L-System model and the original model confirm that the newly proposed model is a good model for multifractal Internet traffic.Lastly, the achievements of this thesis are applied in the design of a multi-rate traffic generator. By resolving the problems encountered when translating the series generated by theα-β-L-System to physical traffic, we design and implement the hardware-based multi-rate traffic generator and this generator functions well when used in the design of Internet equipments.
